Filibuster Cartoon
Title: Dion Gets Nothing (click to view)
Date: September 19, 2007

Three by-elections were held in Quebec yesterday, and the results brought good news to everyone except Stephane Dion and his Liberal Party.

The Bloc Quebecois saw one of their MPs soundly re-elected with increased support, the NDP won their first Quebec seat in over a decade, and the Conservatives jumped more than 20% in one riding to wrestle a new MP from a traditional Liberal stronghold.

The Liberals got nothing, which comes as something of a blow to Mr. Dion, considering he was supposed to help his party reverse the trend of conservative gains in Quebec. The pundits have probably gone too far in calling this \"the beginning of the end\" for Dion\'s leadership, but still, there\'s no denying the symbolic impact of the results.
Frankly if I may.

Hopefully Dion goes soon. I have not liked him for one second as leader of a party that I see should be pushing the conservatives to stay honest and lead as best they can without dirty tricks. He just can't do the job.

What we need for the liberal party is a leader who not only stays away from dirty tactics but has the brains to show the direction the liberals can go to prove themselves as changed from the days of the sponsership scandal.

Who is that leader? Frankly no clue but it's not Dion.

Actually JJ, the Bloc MP was re-elected with reduced support, and the conservative guy was elected in a county traditionally owned by the Bloc, not the Liberals (I'm not 100% positive about that last one, but close to). The Libs were by far the biggest losers, but the Bloc can't really be happy either.
