Filibuster Cartoon
Title: Dion the new Day? (click to view)
Date: February 21, 2007

Stephane Dion does not appear to be paying off for the Liberal Party. A new poll released the other day shows that Prime Minister Harper is dramatically more liked by Canadian voters. Even the pro-Liberal Globe and Mail ran a lead headline yesterday declaring \"Tories surge on Harper\'s leadership.\"

Harper outpolls Dion on every question of leadership, and significantly, Dion does not even hold a lead when voters are asked which man is more trustworthy when it comes to the environment. That issue had previously been considered Dion\'s saving grace.

The Liberal Party had some interesting people running to be its leader, but they ended up settling on the most establishment of all the leading candidates. Hopes were high, but now comparisons are being made to Stockwell Day, another Canadian party leader with a notoriously short honeymoon.

While I'm not at all surprised in the least to see Dion turn sour with the Canadian public, I was a more than a little shocked to see that he even had a honeymoon to begin with. The article itself brings out the most surprising point, as only 1/5 of all Canadians view Dion as being the most capable party leader to be a Prime Minister. Unless Harper messes up badly, Dion's screwed.

Really makes you wonder if Harper would consider calling for another election sometime this year if the poll numbers stay at this rate for a while....

The idea of "calling for an election" still seems so bizarre to me. I guess it's not really so different from recall elections, but I prefer scheduled elections to be the default system.

Hey J.J., great work as usual, but a minor noticing: You seem to be suffering from a "label creep." I also noticed it in your Obama/Clinton cartoon: Not every politician needs to have some sort of label on them.

These out of election polls are not really dependable...especially on questions like that. These things can change on a dime, on one perception...just look last year.

A lot of Americans read my comics and no one will know who Mr. Dion is unless I label him. Or even most of the Canadians, I assume. He is still quite unknown and I'm not very good at drawing him.

Sadly, that's actually generally also true for American Democracy. When Clinton and Carter ran, no one knew who they were before the primaries.

It's also the same reason why Giuliani is ahead in the polls in the Republican primaries; if the mass conservative base knew how liberal he is/was on abortion and gay rights, his poll numbers would be much lower.

Name Regconition is not necessarily a good thing. It means you have a high perch to fall down from; look at Howard Dean.

Dion only had a "honeymoon" because of the Liberal loving media in this country. And the hype about the environment. It does not surprize me that their polling numbers are where they are. It was a disaster waiting to happen after they voted him to be their Leader.

Iggy must be pissed

Everyone who knew Dion from before he became Liberal leader knew he was going to crash and burn in the polls reallllllly fast. Why? Simple, his attitude is just despisable. Always snotty, never seems to understand humor and quick to accuse and dismiss other people (although the latter is the case for a huge number of politicians so maybe we can disregard that).

He used to be the leader of the opposition with the Canadian Alliance, he is now serving in Harper's cabinet with the conservatives

I think Harps shouldn't call elections but should stick to his principles even if unpopular and let the opposition hold the election.

Is the fixed election bill still in the Senate?

Fixed election bill? Is this "fixed" as in "We fixed the toilet so it stops backing up." or as in "I fixed the lotto so only I can win."?

I gotta admit, I'd push for the lotto one myself.

But I was being ironic. Good luck to you Canadians for your fixed election dates.
