Filibuster Cartoons
Title: Don't mock me! (click to view)
Date: April 4, 2009
In the wake of what the Canadian Press has described as a “national uproar,” FOX News released an official apology last week for offending Canada’s delicate sensibilities some weeks ago during an episode of their unpopular late-night chat show “Red Eye.” The episode in question featured a brief segment about the Canadian military’s (real) proposal to withdraw from all peacekeeping and combat missions for at least a year, with such a breather period being used to reorganize and recuperate for future missions. The “Red Eye” people thought this was very comical, and bantered about it in the usual manner that comedians banter about small countries with underfunded armies.

Canadians are not known for their thick skin, especially when it comes to criticism in the American media (to say nothing of the right-wing American media). So in the days that followed “Red Eye” was furiously denounced in every single national newspaper, facebook groups and petitions sprung up, and even the Defense Minister himself eventually joined in, declaring solemnly that the heroic men and women of the Canadian armed forces do not deserve such ignorant mockings, etc.

If only Canada could somehow harness petty national insecurity into a destructive weapon. Then we’d have a military nobody would mock.

test

My first post wouldnt post.

Just wanted to say I've seen our military literally holding the hands of the yanks in the arctic so they wouldnt get lost so our guys and gals have nothing to be ashamed of.

They dont laugh or snicker when they see Americans getting off the plane dressed for summer, they help them get furs and what have you to stay alive.
But if it makes them feel tougher to have to run us down then whos the bigger person?

I didnt see this as "Americans making fun of Canada" I saw it as Fox news, specificly Red Eye, poking a stick at Canada. I doubt many Americans even saw the show. It true though, Canada needs to grow up in this aspect. If a tweleve year old makes fun of you do you stamp your feet and cry like a little girl? You either ignore it or you laugh with them. Orignaly I was piss off but when I found out it was on Fox, at 3 am and that it wasnt funny I just ignored it. The rest of Canada should have done the same.

Well it didnt bother me,dont know why some posters got their panties in a knot over it.

So maybe it's the few who were crying who should grow up,the peeps who didnt give a shit didnt give a shit, that's why you dont hear from them about this.
The majority of us dont give a shit,it's a non story.

Once again, if a leftist up here talked US soldiers in the same fashion as Gutfield and his panel, O'Reilly, Coulter, and the other usual suspects would have been calling for a boycott of Canadian products or something else.

Seems to be a pretty accurate representation of most Fox newscasters.

It was their unpopular comedy show at night. Seriously, I think people are pissed Fox did it, when any comic on the Comedy Channel has probably said this, if not worse. I think it's because it's America saying it, while if it was, oh, I dunno, a Canadian comedy show, you wouldn't care.

It's too bad that didn't go viral instead of the red eye but the fact was the red eye was obscene in their mockery. You don't make fun of the dead and you don't mock sacrfice of an ally in a time of war.

True enough but you've got to consider the source.

This is the same station that hired a "blonde joke" as a reporter, and then watched her prove that she's actually thicker than two short planks by spouting off about how Canada had fought alongside America in Viet Nam.

People shouldn't take anything FOX news says seriously, since their slant on the news is so screwed up with wrong facts and inaccuracies that it makes Muhammed Saeed al-Sahaf, seem like Loyd Robertson by comparison.

Ann was pretty well owned on the Vietnam thing but it was funny to watch her stumble.

FOG do we 'consider the source' when it's Karzi passing a rape law or another IED that blows up on a road killing our boys cleared by ANA troops that we just paid their salaries for and equipped because their own government is too corrupt to do it themselves? These are all straws but the camels back is nearing the breaking point already and these ass clowns were yuking it up. Fox news itself should have had the sanity to see this for what it was and yanked the fucking show as an example.

It was so much the making fun of Canada as the making fun of Canadians at war when we had a planeload of dead soldiers flying in right after. Bad timing. AS comics, these clowns should know better.

Yeah, I thought the reactionw as a little over the top, and indeed had to check myself. We're a little thin-skinned perhaps, with respect to the US. It's not a flattering characteristic of Canada but it is true, much as I hate to admit it. But just a little. Ask the Danes about thin-skinned. I think the Danish PM still has a fatwa on him after the Mohammed cartoons. That's thin-skinned.

I don't think most Americans have the enough global awareness to be thin-skinned. I don't think they even realize when they are being parodied.
