While it is true that many minimum wage jobs cannot be outsourced, the persons that are willing to perform those jobs are often: (A) youth, who lack the experience and educational qualifications to command a decent wage; (B) persons born outside the U.S., and often without citizenship, who lack the experience and educational qualifications to command a decent wage. Youth can sometimes afford to do minimum wage work because their living expenses are subsidized by parents or guardians; persons born outside the United States do the work because they are willing to tolerate the associated low standards of living.

Whoa, sparky. The illegal aliens are consistently working for LESS THAN MINIMUM WAGE.

Unemployed Americans who would take those jobs are being outcompeted and no one does anything about it because the illegals are the darlings of the left.

Is it the government or the private sector who hires illegals?

And the argument for abolishing the minimum wage is that it would allow others to compete with illegal workers. But that depends on their being willing to accept the same low standards of living. Most people born in this country aren't raised with those kinds of expectations, or in a context that makes low compensation (by U.S. standards) seem appealing.

That's a misleading characterization of the problem. The previous post is right on the mark: it's the private sector doing the hiring; the private sector that passes the buck onto the government by insisting that monitoring for illegals should be a regulatory activity (despite access to government databases that confirm the right to work, less than ten percent of private businesses perform verification checks); the private sector that has largely stayed out of the debate on border security and reform.

Given that its the private sector doing the hiring, and given that corporations give donations to one or both parties in the US, I'd say this has less to do with politics than it does to do with maximizing profits.

Given Wall Street's singular focus on quarterly profit statements, it should be of little surprise that corporations are hiring illegals, and offshoring/outsourcing jobs when given the opportunity. After all, bigger profits mean higher stock prices and better dividends - as well as bigger bonuses for executives.
