Filibuster Cartoons
Title: Generic Israel Comic (click to view)
Date: June 4, 2010
The big Middle East related news of the past week was the Israeli government's bungled apprehension of the so-called Gaza Flotilla.

So there were these six ships trying to get to the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip territory, full of a bunch of activist types who claimed to be humanitarians wanting to bring food and medical supplies to the impoverished Palestinians. The Israelis, however, have imposed a  blockade on foreign ships entering the area, in order to prevent arms smugglings and such. Israeli commandos thus stormed the flotilla before it could reach its destination, fights broke out on deck, and 11 people were killed in the ensuing scuffle.

And there's not much else to say, because even with that limited amount of information you can probably draw all sorts of wild conclusions, either for or against Israel, in the same way everyone always does about every Israel-related issue ever.

Haha, you hit the nail on the head with that comic! But, then, isn't that always the reaction you get? =]

Is that Ann Coulter or Sarah Palin in the 5th panel?

I was actually thinking mostly of that horrible congresswoman from Minnesota, though it's kind of a composite character, really.

It's gotten to the point that I've been copy/pasting posts of mine from previous threads to counter all the Israel-was-wrong posts on internet forums while the Israel-was-wrong posters continue to copy/paste the same long debunked claims that what Israel did was "illegal". It's getting rather amusing at this point. Like having to explain for the 20th time that "Neutral Waters" and "International Waters" are not the same thing.

Hopefully they just shoot out the rudder on the next ship, that is on the way from Ireland, then tow it to port and avoid the whole mess again. It should also make for a great comic then.

This comic nicely demonstrates what this has all decayed into, a backing and forthing of words and criticism while everyone has forgotten the original actions and motivations.

Well done sir.

I know, everyone is copying/pasting and nobody is reading anything anymore. It goes nicely with the comic.

Random thought: red means communist, green means environmentalist, and blue (as in blue state) means liberal. Why don't conservative or libertarian have colors of their own?

On a side note, the films of the boarding have been published for a while now, and the only ship fighting broke out on was the Mavi Marmara.

The fun bit this time is that Turkey has switch to the Arab camp, which has the potential to change the dynamics considerably. I suspected if we sit this one out, that we'll be looking at another Arab Israeli war before to much longer, which could get fun if Iran has nukes by then.

Where things get really fun is, if the IDF can't hold them, Israel is small enough that it can be completely over run in only a few hours. Casualties could easily be in the millions before we even know the wars started. Fun all around.

In most of the Anglo world, conservatives are blue. The Red state/Blue state idea is a very new American thing that doesn't seem to stem from anything deeper than CNN's color choices on their 2000 election map. And I suspect they only made the Republicans red to avoid the sort of "Democrats are commies!" comments that would inevitably result if people started using the adjective "Red" in reference to liberalism.

Do you have a flag?

Perhaps that's the problem with the Libertarians, they don't have a flag.

For those who don't get the joke. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEx5G-GOS1k

Yup, the one ship that was crewed by jihads is also the only one where they attacked the IDF and got shot. The others resisted in passive ways and were a giant PITA to the IDF, but didn't get shot.

Turkey isn't stupid, they know full well that Israel has a decent second strike capability with its Dolphin-class submarines, which are unofficially armed with nuclear tipped cruise missiles. The Israelis almost went nuclear on the Arabs in 73. Many countries in the region may hate Israel, but they aren't too keen to have large portions of their major cities vaporized in a retaliatory strike.

Thus exists the current situation where countries like Iran and such support/provide weapons to terrorist organizations that act against Israel. Israel won't use nukes against Iran for such things, but would use them were Iran to launch an all out attack. Thus the nuclear advantage that Israel has is effectively neutralized. The other Arab nations don't want the Palestinians in their borders because they are politically useful to them only if they remain in Gaza. Thus they do not allow large scale immigration of Palestinians.

Interesting, but not going to happen for the reasons above.

Regarding libertarians, anarchists have historically had black as their color, so perhaps libertarians could go with a dark gray?

I was mostly being silly. I seem to remember CNN swapping the parties' colors every Presidential election until the Red State/Blue State became such an ingrained meme in 2000. Rush Limbaugh occasionally complains about Red still meaning Communist, not Republican, in his mind. Having a symbolic color for your party/ideology is kinda ridiculous anyway; reminds me of the super-intelligent shade of the color blue from Douglas Adams' writings.
