Such an awful, hopeless place, Haiti. The country's population, pre-quake, was about 9 million. Current estimates put the casualty count around 200,000, which means 2% of the entire country has died. And it's not impossible at all that the final toll could be much, much higher.

Do you know about that Red Cross texting trick you can do? It's only for Americans, but it's fun and easy. If you text "Haiti" to 90999 on your cellular telephone you can donate $10 today. Cool! Is there any gimmicky way for Canadians to do something similar? I'd be curious to know...

Putting "Imperialism" into a Haiti-stew makes it look like you're calling the Haitians imperialists. I'm pretty sure that's not the impression you're advocating.

I'm not sure about teh Red Cross, but I got this from the Salvation Army in Canada:

There are hoaxes going around that when you text a certain # with "Haiti", some other company than YOU is donating. That is bs. YOU are donating.

(I know, it sounds like a stupid warning, but people really believed that their text got someone else to donate)
