Filibuster CartoonsTitle: Here we go again! (click to view) Date: October 15, 2008 So Canada held an election yesterday. The Prime Minister called it for unclear reasons, there were very few issues of importance debated during it, and the eventual results were virtually unchanged from the previous election, held less than three years ago. Harper is still Prime Minister, and he still only controls a plurality of the seats in the parliament. All the other parties have retained their rank status as well, except the Liberals went down a bit.
The election cost $300 million, though. I hope someone, somewhere felt it was worth it.

I'm sure Danny Williams did.
5 MOST DANGEROUS THINGS IN THE ARMY 1. A Private saying, "I learned this in Basic..." 2. A Sergeant saying, "Trust me, sir..." 3. A Second Lieutenant saying, "Based upon my experience..." 4. A Captain saying, "I was just thinking..." 5. A Master Warrant Officer chuckling, "Watch this shit..."

What bothers me the most is that none of the news shows I've watched even mentioned that Canada had an election yesterday. No, no... we hear about how Madona's love life is going all day.

It wasn't even a headline in my local paper. So irritating.

Rush Limbaugh and Paul Harvey both mentioned in passing last week that Canada was having an election. That's all I saw of it in the US media.

I spotted it in a link pretty inconspicuously placed on the Fox News site.

I knew there was an election coming up just because Filibuster Cartoons had mentioned it before, but I didn't realize that it was today or that the results were in already. Huh. How about that.

Where do you get an alarm clock that shows the date like that?

Was it worth $300 million and violating the Conservatives own election law to get those 16 new seats? I doubt you'll find anyone who will agree it was a good idea, considering it still resulted in a minority. Some pundits talk about "this is a good first step" seeing as how they made progress, but then again, were people voting for Harper because they like his platform overall, or just because they figure the best guy to have in charge right now is an economist.
With rumours of Stephan Dion stepping down, Harper has lost his chance to run an election against a "weak" Liberal party.
You know you have a sad excuse for a reformist party when you start using the faults of the previous "corrupt" party that has lost "the moral authority to govern" as the basis for why you're pulling the same stunts...

When you think about it, it's not that bad for Liberals. The Tories are still in a minority position, except now they're more stuck (since all parties will be loathe to force an election any time soon). The Liberals have ample opportunity to get (hopefully) a more effective leader and drum up some support for him/her. Well, that's the silver lining anyway!

A truly worthless election that will probably prove counter-productive to the Cons since, as Zipperfish and Jabrwock pointed out, the Libs will have a stronger leader next time... it will take more of the Cons than just an okay, straightforward, "cruise-control mandate" for them to win a majority considering the Libs are unlikely to not get stronger, I think.
EDIT: PS JJ, I absolutely love the analogy. Awesome comic.
I think, therefore I vote Neo Rhino!
