Which is worse, burning Bush in effigy or drawing Obama as an ape?

Compare apples to apples. Bush was drawn as an ape and no one on the left complained about it. So why not subject Obama to the exact same mockery as Bush?

Drawing Bush as an ape is not really the same thing as drawing Obama as an ape, given the historical stereotypes.

A better comparison would be drawing Bush as a Klansman, or a plantation owner, as that plays to the stereotype, and would have gotten a few people riled up.

What about Dubya depicted as an ape as a commentary about evolution denial and his evangelical Christianity?

I say let it all hang out. If somebody goes over the line, the blowback will just hurt their own cause.

Over two weeks without a follow up, hope i'm not considering necromancing here, but there is something I wanted to address in this topic.

A lot of the back and forth posts between various users here both demonstrate the key issue that prevents (at least America) from out growing racism: the notion that "race" applies to and can be used for the classifications of the human species. The perpetuation of this way of thinking has caused a bipolarity in the issue regarding ethnic discrimination and results in people thinking discrimination is like an acid + base reaction — mix equal parts of both to neutralize it. And frankly, reverse-discrimination is not a solution.

To stem-out "racism" would take a completely different way of people thinking of the human species as the concept of "race" inherently brings with it "racism".

Bush was drawn as a chimp and orangutan because quite frankly..he LOOKS like both!!! Image
Seriously, put some hair on that face and it becomes very apparent.
