Commentary in hindsight now that the election has happened: well, Manchin actually pulled it off and won, so we managed to hold off the crazy right-winger and elect a true progr... oh, wait.

All in all, the election was almost as depressing as I expected it to be. I'm okay because I had already braced myself for the worst of it, and because I have the silver lining that at least my representative stood on principle (taking the Perriello approach of never pretending he was anything but proud to have voted the way he did) and won, 52% to 48%. As I said earlier in this thread, as long as he survived (which he did), that's at least something, right?

I don't know what "flooding" the Parliament means. I'm sure it must be some arcane and boring Parliamentary procedure, and that Mulroney didn't actually petition the Queen to tie members of Parliament down and literally flood the chamber like some sort of Bond villain until they all agreed to vote yes on the GST, but that mental image is just too awesome for me to not believe that is what happened.

Funny! Thanks for the laugh.

I dunno, the States seem mighty lurch-y these days. Not Lurch as in the Frankenstein butler for teh Addam's family...

but lurch as in suddenly tip to one side then another.
