To make two quick things clear, I'm a dirty American liberal but even I found this apalling and second, this is obviously an isolated incident and shouldn't mar an entire section of the political spectrum.

With that said, this sounds like some hackneyed Law & Order plot than real life. Is this sparking an outrage on the order of say, Harper punching Martin's grandchild in the face, or just some passing headline that everyone will soon forget?

So these college kids decided not to support medical research because it would supposedly only help whites? That's your complaint?

I'm always happy to criticize political correctness run amok, but I'm not convinced that's what this article describes.

1) It mainly affects Caucasians in the formal sense of the term; that is, people whose ancestry can be traced back to the general region of the Caucasus Mountains. That includes Europe, the Middle East, India, a huge chunk of Central Asia, and small proportions of every other race (through interracial mingling over millennia). Confusing that with 'white' the way most people mean it is just factually wrong. It's no unique fault of political correctness.

2) "the clause about cystic fibrosis being a white man's disease was not the determining factor in Monday night's vote" They give a source for the student claiming that race was not the central issue, but offer only vague implication in the other direction. Thus, the evidence suggests that it's not a race issue at all.

3) "Student leaders at the University of Ottawa said they will continue supporting Shinerama." So this one college's support for this one charity for this one disease might not actually be changing in any significant way anyway, regardless of the cause.

This is what's known as a "non-issue", in that there's more implication and hype than there is factual evidence. It's more like some reporter desperately searching for a story of political correctness run amok.

Sounds like the hysteria machine is up and a'runnin'

If this is true, which I doubt, but if it is..why pull out anyway? My family has a long history of cancer of both the majority female (Breast, cervical) and male (Testicular) variety and without the hundreds of millions of Sterling, Euros and Dollars raised every year, I don't think I'd be able to say that half my family would be here today.

What if we started to give to these medical research charities solely on the basis of selfish beliefs set upon race and sex? This would have catastrophic consequences for the whole of medical research.

I'd ask these Canadian students to take a long, long look in the mirror because they've seriously let Canada down.

EDIT: These stories can be incredibly dangerous, remember the story about the MMR vaccine to prevent Mumps, Measles and Rubella in children? The one which said a UK study showed that the vaccine caused autism in children?

Several years on and despite the study being ripped to shreds and the doctor behind it barred from practicing in the UK, parents still cite the story when stating that they will not be giving their children the vaccine.
