I didn't show Jefferson because I actually agree with Hamilton and disagree with Jefferson/Jackson.
Back then, government did need to be bigger. But we passed up the size it needed to be long ago, and now it needs to be smaller. But if you look at that chart, the smallest our government spending has been as a percent of GDP since WW2 was almost as low as the Civil War peak. All three major war peaks can fit in the mass of post-WW2 big government spending at least a dozen times. It makes no sense for us to be spending at WW1 levels as the status quo.
I know about the typo (and at least one other), but I'm not going to bother to fix it. It was fun, but it's over now.
