Layton isn't a stupid man. He's not about to "about face" Canada into the Second World toilet and cause it's destruction, any more than Iggy or Harper would. That ends the turn at power, and each of them know it. That's why the make these campaign promises they never can nor intend to fulfill.

He'll do what all PMs before him did, small steps with the occasional low cost party platform promise fulfilled, so he can harp on it next election.

Like I just said on another thread, the NDP wouldn't even support a mandatory miniumum sentencing bill for pedophiles who are engaing in sex trafficking of children. This is the NDP for you in one brief description of their nauseating behaviour. I'm not saying live in fear, but I am saying that people should be more aware of exactly what sort of creature they're throwng their support behind. This is a party that's full of really bad and dangerous ideas. Blank out the insipid cheerleading that's broken out for them recently and you'll see it too.

I don't disagree with you, but I also can apply your last sentence to most any party. The Liberals ignoring youth crime for so long, the Conservatives who are following the USA's bad example of mandatory minimum sentences. . .

But we saw the difference between the Reform Party in Opposition and The CPC in Government. It's the way opposition needs to be - they must oppose everything not in the interest of the party. They have to follow party, it's the way parliament is structured and that is why it's broken.

I'd be perfectly happy if the NDP squashed the Bloc out of existence, and made the Liberals sit in the 'Bookends' and became the official opposition. It would be a better balance for the CPC I think. Then we can see if they would be ready for a minority government or not, in a few years.

To me the Harperites have the lock on dangerous ideas.

As for that bill. Are you sure it didn't include provisions where some 17 year old gives some 15 year old a squeeze on the breast and is branded a pedophile for life? The Dippers care about children just as much as you do. They just don't play the politics of fear around law and order. There's a lot of push back about mandatory minimum sentencing from the people in the know. But of course it plays very well with Joe Plumber (even me) to get those perverts. The actual issue is usually much more nuanced than what the CPC wants you to believe.
