One of the reasons that some far right and even moderate Republicans strongly dislike McCain is his support for the bill to ban political advertising within 60 days of an election. Though 'the liberal media' is something of a cliche, the fact remains that the major networks cover the Democratic Party more than the Republican Party. Many on the right thereby view a ban on advertising as a ban on Republicans as the Democratic candidates will have an airtime advantage leading up to the election. The NRA in particular is very concerned about this as they have actually studied the coverage gap between the two parties and their political action branch would be effectively silenced by such a bill. And yet, McCain continues to support it. He's essentially viewed as a traitor because of this. And everyone hates traitors.

Good post, but why isn't it in the "Eating their own" thread along with the rest of the discussion?

Ah, excellent point. My apologies. These things happen when one is sleep deprived. Moderator, if you could please?
