In Canada, some people are anti-American no matter what. It is partly because we have a hard time coming up with an identity for ourselves. Thus being Canadian is "noting being American". It comes out of that. I think that idea is BS, but it is common.

People are big on bashing the US, in particular similar to what Sapio has stated, they blame the US because we don't have a 'national identity'

This is stemming from the 'pay people to be different' ideology of Canada. It's a bit like the united church really, anything goes you don't even have to believe in god but hey...welcome over here!
