Filibuster CartoonsTitle: Quiet patriotism (click to view) Date: February 19, 2010 This is an actual quote from Liberal Leader Ignatief, who authored a rambling, mushy editorial about the Olympics and Canadian identity (or something) for the New York Times last week.
I have never understood where this fashionable myth of the "politely patriotic" Canadian comes from. Ride any train in Vancouver at the moment and you'll be greeted with a scene identical to the one above, which, in turn, is not terribly different from what you'll see at your average Canada Day celebration, or any other competitive-patriotic occasion.
I suppose if you lead an upper-crust, ivory tower sort of life, like, say, if you are leader of the Liberal Party, you'll rarely come into contact with the sort of beer-soaked chauvinism that thrives among the Kraft Dinner set. But it's there just the same, a loud, boorish style of national pride on par with anything the Italians, Mexicans, or even the much-hated Americans produce.

Oh, Canada Our home and native land, True patriot love In all thy sons command. With glowing hearts We see thee rise, The true, north, strong, and free. From far and wide Oh Canada We stand on guard for thee. God keep our land Glorious and free. Oh, Canada we stand on guard for thee, Oh, Canada we stand on guard for thee. ![Canada Flag [flag]](./images/smilies/smilie_flag.gif)

I suppose he does mean the elite, presumably those elements (diplomatic, political) that deal with foreigners, especially if they denigrate Canada. Or he may be trying to create a "useful myth" or "noble lie" about Canada. Canada's image and influence in the world is improved if the rest believe that Canadians have a quiet, sober pride (innuendo, as opposed to the maniacs on our southern border). Whether or not it is true..

What sucks is that no one in my town gives a crap about the Olympics. I feel like the only one watching! The only other person I've talked to lately has been a cop who told me the results of the recent curling game against Great Britain (7-6, woot!). Can't find fans anywhere.

Wow! When I saw the cartoon on Filibuster Cartoons, all I could think of was the Curling debacle.
So I was watching Women's Curling (yes, I was watching women sliding stones across ice and sweeping) and the Canadians were up against the Dutch (or maybe it was the finns, I dont remember) and the Canadian crowd was so rowdy and boisterous in their cheers for the home team that Dutch team captain was actually distracted enough to miss a shot. Low and behold, it brought the poor girl to tears.
They said, it was so bad, the International Curling Association (apparently it exists) is looking into it, and considering filing a grievance to the IOC.
Who knew?!
If you're not familiar with the eitquette of curling, just know that its along the same lines as golf or tennis: spectators must be quiet.

There's no such thing this olympics as a Dutch womens curling team. If there was, the place would be packed with cheering people dressed in orange. You would know. Seriously.
