Ibrahim is the Islamic name for Abraham, father of Ishmael (Islamic spelling:
Ismail) and Isaac and, through them, the Arabs and the Jews. I looked it up hoping it meant material wealth. A millionaire named "Mo Money" would have been rather hilarious. All joking aside, he certainly seems to have earned his money.
As for his prize:
To qualify for the Mo Ibrahim Prize, you have be a democratically elected African ruler who handed over power peacefully to a similarly elected successor, and did good things for the country while you had power. The prize is worth $5 million US in the first 10 years, and more if the ex-leader enjoys a very long retirement.
What African leaders are the front-runners in this contest?
Yoweri Museveni of Uganda "
stands a chance" it is said.
Wikipedialists him along with "
Paul Kagame of Rwanda, Meles Zenawi of Ethiopia, and Isaias Afewerki of Eritrea" as some of the New Generation of African leaders, but also refers to this classification as a "
largely discredited idea".
Does anyone else feel mostly ignorant about the political landscape in Africa? There are always rumors of political, social, and economic problems from combat in Cote d'Ivoire and Congo to genocide in Rwanda to starvation in Somalia, but I couldn't tell you who the leaders or what the political systems were of any of those nations.
