Sir Paul's presence really invigorated the city, it's amazing. And he was awesomely gracious to us all, too, whereas what some of those twits like Curzi could have had him angered at us! I'm really glad to see just how much he still cares about the crowds he's playing for even though he could just stand there, get his money and retreat back to everyday life afterwards. McCartney kicks ass.

Now to be fair to Curzi and company... well against all odds, they gave the 400th anniversary a lot of visibility because the controversy turned out being what foreign media spoke about. That, and I think they kind of prompted McCartney to show something special out on the plains of Abraham.

Now I still think they're twits (I mean it's fairly well documented I'm all for pride in our identity as Québécois and whatnot but there's a limit to dwelling on a past we've never seen), but all and all their intervention probably actually helped somewhat.

just hard to find something with you to dissagre with :(
Quebec before the English take over was never a souveriegn country. We were dependant on the royal whim of france, only to be will abandon due that it cost too much to defend.........you know come to think of it this province was always a money pit... thats our true history.
You want to be soveriegn? Turn this province around financialy, that should do it
*grunbles under his breath*

As a Brit, I thank Paul McCartney for asking everyone to forget about "frog" slurs on one side and pelting statues of various ancient British military heroes with rotten vegetables on the other (as well as other divisive cultural and historical baggage), put it behind them and enjoy the music. Mission accomplished I think! :D

I'd want the Quebecois to be proud and vibrant of their heritage but they shouldn't let the more extreme elements use outsiders like McCartney and de Gaul before him to needlessly stir up feelings.

On that point, hats off to the Quebecois for doing themselves proud :)

Merci à Paul McCartney d'avoir respecté le peuple Québécois, contrairement à la majorité des Canadiens.

Lui il a compris que le 400e de Québec est une fête québécoise et non canadienne.

Sorry for another question from a dumb American, but is the nature of Quebec's "beef" with the greater Canadian state aimed at the federal government or just anyone who isn't French speaking?

Also, I've tried to read up about this from different viewpoints and some of animosity has been attributed to either a fringe group or a deep-seeded cultural tradition. Is it close to impossible to say one or the other?

One small thing I wanted to add due to Red_Eye's comment which was that Quebec was actually very profitable in the fur trade but France decided to concentrate more on trying to end the Prussian threat under Frederick the Great.
