Filibuster Cartoon
Title: Study hard (click to view)
Date: November 03, 2006

Senator John Kerry attempted to make a joke during a campaign rally the other day, and the results were predictably devastating.

Addressing a crowd of students at Pasadena City College, Kerry praised education, making the quip he\'s making in my comic. Study hard, or you\'ll get stuck in Iraq. Apparently, the intent was to imply Bush is an idiot, but without the vital pronoun \"us,\" his joke comes off as a swipe against soldiers.

Bush and other Republicans have implied this was Kerry\'s intent all along, and are trying to make this into an issue that can swing the election to their favor at the last minute.
eh.... it's a fairly stupid argument to make in an election cycle where the general perception of Congress is as a do-nothing, reactionary to pointless subjects body, though you would've figured that Kerry would've immediately (or very soon thereafter) corrected himself over such an obvious gaffe.

Quote:
I can’t overstress the importance of a great education. Do you know where you end up if you don’t study, if you aren’t smart, if you’re intellectually lazy? You end up getting us stuck in a war in Iraq. Just ask President Bush

What he actually said.

I think, that regardless of wether he meant to say it that way, there is some truth in what he said, it just was a very insulting way to say the truth.

What I mean is that if you don't have a great education, or more precisely, a bad education, you are or most likely will end up poor. And if you are poor, you are more likely to be in the military. Keep in mind that that is what I mean by the quote having some truth in it, not meaning the military is filled with a bunch of people who don't know how to read. Then again, you could use my argument to justify saying blacks are stupid, but thats not what Kerry said.

Again, I don''t mean to say I support what he actually said, but I think if he meant to say that theres a serious problem because the military concentrates recruiting on the working class, than it would be one of the most honest and left-wing things said since election season.

It would be stupid to assume he meant to insult the troops though. Almost as stupid as actually insulting the troops this close to election season. It doesn't make any sense when you ask the questions "why?". You might believe thats what he actually thinks, but if you are a democrat hater (like me, but I also hate the republicans) you would almost certainly believe that the democrats are not honest people. Let's face it, election season is the time for lies and empty promises.

Therefor Kerry really was just making a mistake.

I give this comic 4/5.

There's no need for most Republicans to make a stink about this. Most of us aren't in Massachusetts, so we can't vote against him. Even those of few Massachusetts Republicans around are greatly outnumbered by liberal Democrats. And anyone who cares what Kerry says about the military would already have been put off by his anti-military activism, both in the Vietnam era and his statements about our troops in Iraq in 2004.

Kerry has already lost all the credibility he's going to lose on this issue.

In all honesty I think the only way this affects anything is that there's no way he's going to have enough credibility to run in '08.

As much as I hate Bill O'Reilly, I think there was some truth to what he said when he stated that Hillary Clinton and John McCain should both be mailing flowers to Kerry.

I'm not eager to see John Kerry, John McCain, or Hillary Clinton run for President. But, then, I can't think of any '08 candidate I'd go out of my way to support right now.

You are obviously ignorant to the way the United States military works. I am a soldier in the United States Army. I joined to fund my education and I am currently attending college. I personally know dozens of college educated soldiers in the enlisted side alone. And every commissioned officer I know is highly educated (this is because you are required to have at least a bachelor's degree to become a commissioned officer). So before you go shooting your mouth off about our military I would do some research.

I know a ton of people who consider and some who have joined the military to obtain funding for post secondary education.

But quite frankly I think Kerry is missing the point totally. You can be the smartest person in the world but if you can't articulate your ideas well to others or have the wisdom to see the actions behind your words then your only half intelligent compared to the average person.

Bush is an intelligent person. Whoever he's stupid and unwise as heck at seeing where his thoughts affect the world and he can't articulate his points across without stumbling all over his own words.

He's totally unfit to be president not because he's stupid but because he has no idea on what wisdom is let alone how to apply it to a rapidly changing and chaotic world that his actions have created.

He understands well what each piece is but he doesn't understand why one fits with the other because he only looks at once piece at a time.

Does any of this make sense?

Yes, it makes sense. I think what you're articulating is that wisdom does not equal judgement. Just because you're smart doesn't mean you possess good judgement.
Contrary to urban legend, Bush is not stupid, but he has made lousy judgement calls. Kerry obviously considers himself smarter than Bush, but he is not a fair enough judge of his public speaking abilities to deliver a joke properly.
