I opposed the United States being described as an empire based on the assumption that "empire" was a pejorative for "bully-state" or something similar. I do not object the application to the United States of definitions of empire that lack an element of criticism.

It's fine to criticize the United States based on specific traits, but not pigeonhole terms that amount to name-calling. Since you weren't doing so, we don't disagree.
