Filibuster Cartoons
Title: Two great pals (click to view)
Date: February 22, 2009
So President Obama held good to his promise and made Canada his first international visit last week, traveling to Ottawa to meet with Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

It would be a lie to say the two men enjoyed an easy chemistry, or anything like that. I think they're both respectable, intelligent politicians who take their jobs seriously, but they're also very different, both ideologically and culturally. So any hope of a new era of Canada-US friendship because of Obama will have to be put on hold for a while.

It's rather ironic, of course, that a country as famously liberal as Canada would have a conservative government to greet the most left-wing president in modern US history.

I know I was disappointed they didn't break out into song like Mulroney and Regan. I suspect Harper doesn’t know any of the words to any of Stevie Wonder’s songs.

How would Canadians respond if Canada moved to the right of the USA for some significant amount of time? Would that cause an identity crisis?

Hell yes it would. I'm confused enough already. I feel like Canada is the new America, with the massive stimulus that's going on.

With Harper and Obama, haven't they already?

I think it would cause an enormous identity crisis unlike anything the country has ever seen before. And that's why I think some pundits, like the one I made a thread about a while ago, have already restored to describing Obama as a right-winger, because that's the only way to keep the Canadian identity narrative working properly.

But I don't think it'll last long. I suspect Harper will lose the next election, and the Liberals will be restored and all will be well.

I kind of hope if the liberals win the next election that it is a minority. I have to admit a certain liking for the policies of Iggy but I have to admit at the same time I'd hate to see the conservatives have no say at all in the house. They have proven reasonably responsible and I hope that let them keep a lot more voters to come.

Harper was been anything but reasonable until his government was almost kicked out.

I still wouldn't call Harper "reasonable". It's more a matter that the opposition has a fist full of short and curlies and has got his attention at the moment.

And I don't disagree with that comic but no one but you is blowing things up calling him some sort of second coming of the messiah. Your the only one making such claims. His lack of experience is pretty easy to see for anyone.
