CFL fans were given the opportunity this past weekend to select one 2006 regular season game from a handful of mid-season contests that they would like to view free of charge on CFL Broadband. They chose the Sept. 24th meeting between the B.C. Lions and Saskatchewan Roughriders at Mosaic Stadium in Regina.
The Lions and Roughriders battled in a couple of memorable games earlier in the season, and this contest was no different as extra time was required to determine a winner.
With the game deadlocked at 10-10, Saskatchewan’s Andy Fantuz scored his first-ever CFL touchdown by, of all things, recovering a Kerry Joseph fumble in the end zone with 1:41 remaining in regulation.
But the Lions roared back, as Buck Pierce engineered a scoring drive culminating in a seven-yard pass to Regina native Jason Clermont.
Saskatchewan failed to score on its first overtime possession as Luca Congi was wide on a 32-yard field goal attempt. Lions head coach Wally Buono immediately called Paul McCallum to punt for a game-winning single, but the ball was brought out of the end zone to force a second overtime series.
McCallum was good on a 36-yard field goal to give the Lions the lead, but Joseph connected with Fantuz for a game-winning touchdown, putting an end to B.C.’s seven-game win streak.
