Just like American Football, Hockey, and Basketball play a back seat role in Europe, and, ironically, that is one of the complaints I frequently here from fans of those sports in those nations, that people simply don't get into them as much as the Canadians or Americans do and end up just watching European Football, or Rugby, or Cricket instead. If people were as hell bent on table tennis in Africa as they were in East Asia, I'm sure we'd see it becoming a lot more important down in Africa too.

I have never read a study on it (although, but my theory is that North Americans (Canucks and Yanks) seem to prefer speed/power sports over others (based on overall popularity). That's why football, basketball, baseball and hockey are so popular here, while games that are more strategy and/or endurance - like soccer and rugby are more popular in Europe and many other places. It not a hard and fast rule of course - as there are exceptions like table tennis and cricket.

I know a few people who dislike (hate is such a strong word) the CFL only because they're to busy watching the NFL to care. They don't like how the CFL has only 3 downs instead of 4, although in my mind its better because its not about rushing the ball 2-3 yards at a time. We have a bigger and wider field which means we go for the the long bombs.

All in all, I'm a fan of both leagues,(Stamps and Packers)they both bring something different to the game but alas the NFL gets way more advertisement compared to our humble CFL. I don't know how many times I see the Steelers advertising shampoo on TV.
