xerxes xerxes: Uh.....the Red Cross does realise that video games aren't real right? Apparently not, not very surprising through considering how many people go after them nowadays.

xerxes xerxes: Uh.....the Red Cross does realise that video games aren't real right? Apparently not. Hell I've driven around in the Grand Theft Auto games picking up hookers and then beating them up for their money. Doesn't mean I'd do it in real life or condone someone else doing it irl. Let's face it, by this kind of "accounting" the vast majority of gamers would be criminals on some level.

You're doing it wrong, you're supposed to let them do the deed first, then kill them for cash.

Feel free to skip this, I'm in a bit of a ranting mood.
I suppose I am an evil bastard. In the last year alone, I have:
Slit a man's throat from behind and saved a man's life in another. Shot a man in cold blood and threw my body in front of the bullet for another. Removed a family's home, and constructed a hospital for the community. Engaged in nuclear brinkmanship and supported nuclear disarmament. Condemned scientific advancement and discovered endless sources of energy. Brought my rampaging horde upon villages and defended villages from rampaging hordes. Fostered peace with the Romans, and gone to war with the Persians. I have torn down civilizations and built even greater ones. Strip mined worlds while terraforming others. Bombed one world out of existence and gave another defenses so that will never happen. Let loose the gods of war and held closed the gates of oblivion. Summoned demons into the world and exorcised demons out of it. Ended the world and created it. Destroyed the gods and became a god.
I left out the stuff on magic, since... it doesn't exist. I look forward to see how all those crimes will be weighed.
Then, be sure to go after everyone who makes movies, writes books, performs in plays or thinks of being the hero or the villain. All those who seek to abstract, idealize, moralize or discuss the concept of violence, sexuality, morality and mortality. Those who bring us into worlds that are not ours, and do not pretend that ours is the only one with violence, do not shy away from conflict and do not hide from humanity.
Gamers stand on the very edge of what humanity has to offer. We stand as a beacon of creativity, ingenuity and community above and beyond what most mediums have created in the past. We stand as a focal point of change, a driving force which has begun today to play a major role in how the world turns including supporting cases like the pro-democratic, pro-peace and pro-freedom movements like the Arab Spring. Groups like the Cross standing here choose to "act" even though they clearly know there is nothing supporting their proclamations and assertions.
Most groups today have moved on past the idiotic blatherings of gentlemen like Jack Thompson and recognize that those issues they so fear, those who cannot tell reality from fiction, have used other mediums for decades to help smolder and build the fire within them. The most recent political shootings down in the States shows those who got their violent ideals not from video games, but from paper, in a book. Hell, studies have begun to show the opposite impact of video games in our newest generation than media releases like this promote the ideal of.
This is well below what I expected from the Red Cross. They, more than anyone, should know exactly where their efforts should lie, where the money and attention should go, and it is far, far away from cyberspace, empires of bits and exultation in non-existence. I'm disgusted that the word delegate came in plural form. It perpetuates a pathetic level of pedantry to the public. Talk about the portrayal of violence or it's relevance in video games all you want, but don't pretend it is an endemic threat, don't pretend we are anywhere close to killing actual people, and don't pretend that this is as worth your time as the dozens of warlords, despots and dictators and the mass harm and suffering they cause every day.

$1: “There’s a danger of war becoming a spectator sport. People need to realise that this is real stuff.” Ummm...it was when nations had small professional armies that marched into a battle, stood in ranks and fired at each other. Civilians would watch the battles from the sidelines and hills that offered a good view of the field. this ended with total war.

I wonder if the Red Cross has been taking "stupid" lessons from PETA.

Lol there should be games where you get to piss off oddly uptight groups of people who get all hung up on minor things. Like PETA, religious fanatics, and these guys.

...and I have removed the Red Cross from my workplace United Way donation list as of about 30 seconds ago. If this is the nonsense they're spending my money on then I can put it somewhere else.
