As flawed as our system may be, I'll gladly take it. I don't think most people in this country realize just how much coverage we DO have. Go ahead and bitch about what you don't get or what isn't covered, but suffer a massive heart attack, undergo a few surgeries to repair it, and see how poor it is when you receive a bill for.... $0.00.

Yes, I'm sure others have better, but I really don't think we're so bad off as everyone gripes we are.

R=UP

Based on the health issues my father has had over the past 30 years, if we had lived in the USA, our family probably would have had to declare bankruptcy (he worked as a sub-contractor and had no extra health care coverage), lost our home and every penny of our savings. Instead, he got better, we kept our house, and our family prospered.

unlike Alberta, MSI nova scotia( basic healthcare) is free to all nova scotia residents. I didn't know this until I moved here.

All the NS gov't probably did is hide the MSI Premiums in your taxes, so in essence you are still paying for your health care.

For example on your taxes:

NS AB BC

Basic amount 8231 16825 11000

1st Bracket 8.79% 10% 5.05%
2nd Bracket 14.95% 10% 7.70%
3rd Bracket 16.67% 10% 10.50%
4th Bracket 17.50% 10% 12.29%
5th Bracket 21.00% 10% 14.70%

So, it looks like you pay alot more taxes in NS than Alberta or even BC, which if I was to guess would be going to that free health care and this doesn't even cover the 15% HST or the 15% gas tax.

Like I said before there is no free health care.

I rememmber when Klien sent out a letter to voters asking what we thought our priorities should be. He included a section full of impending issues. One of them was healthcare costs. I believe he said that all healthcare costs in Alberta amounted to more money than is collected from all provincial income taxes from Albertans. Pretty big number, eh?
