The most wonderful drink ever...

Coffee Lowers Risk of Prostate Cancer, Harvard Study Says
Quote:
More important, the heavy coffee drinkers were 60 percent less likely than the nondrinkers to develop a lethal form of the disease.

Coffee Contains What Scientists Say Is A Healthy Antioxidant: Caffeine
Quote:
When the body's uses enzymes to create chemical reactions, certain highly charged ions can be emitted. Called free radicals, these ions can do damage to nearby genetic material, a process that can degrade cell quality over time. The research group said that while it doesn't yet know how caffeine prevents this process, it may one day be used in therapies for certain age-related conditions.

Heavy Coffee Consumption Linked to Better Hep C Treatment Response
Quote:
Patients with advanced hepatitis C virus–related liver disease who drank three or more cups of coffee per day were three times more likely to respond to therapy with peginterferon alfa-2a plus ribavirin at four time points than were patients who didn’t drink coffee, Neal David Freedman, Ph.D., and his colleagues reported in the June issue of Gastroenterology.

Association of Coffee and Caffeine Intake With the Risk of Parkinson Disease
Quote:
Our findings indicate that higher coffee and caffeine intake is associated with a significantly lower incidence of PD. This effect appears to be independent of smoking. The data suggest that the mechanism is related to caffeine intake and not to other nutrients contained in coffee.

Migraines, Headaches, and Caffeine
Quote:
Caffeine is a common ingredient in many prescription and over-the-counter headache medications (see list below). Caffeine additives make pain relievers 40% more effective in treating headaches. Caffeine also helps the body absorb headache drugs more quickly, bringing faster relief. By adding caffeine and, in turn, taking less medication, you can reduce the risk for potential side effects and possible drug addiction.

Prevention of dental caries
Quote:
The tannins in coffee may reduce the cariogenic potential of foods. In vitro experiments have shown that these polyphenolic compounds may interfere with glucosyltransferase activity of mutans streptococci, which may reduce plaque formation.

Is coffee a colonic stimulant?
Quote:
Caffeinated coffee, decaffeinated coffee and meal induced more activity in the colon with a greater area under the curve of pressure waves (P < 0.01) and a greater number of propagated contractions (P < 0.05) when compared with water. Caffeinated coffee, decaffeinated coffee and meal induced greater (P < 0.05) motor activity in the transverse/descending colon when compared with the rectosigmoid colon. The effects of decaffeinated coffee on colonic motility were not significantly different from those of water

Coffee consumption and risk of incident gout in men: A prospective study
Quote:
We documented 757 confirmed incident cases of gout. Increasing coffee intake was inversely associated with the risk of gout.

Coffee may prevent breast cancer among postmenopausal women
Quote:

Probably doesn't do much for mid life dementia though. ;)

About three years ago one evening I had a migraine headache that landed me in the hospital emergency room. After about 10 hours of pumping me with drugs the migraine went away. They couldn't find any real cause for a headache at all.

When I was discharged one of the Doctors there recommended that I drink black coffee, he said I could add sugar but he wanted me to not use milk as it changes the chemistry. I did as he suggested and I've had very few headaches at all.

I drink exactly 2 cups a day, in the morning. More gives me a stomach ache and nausea for the rest of the day, and less gives me headaches.

Time for my second cup!

Tea is much more healthy than coffee. After all, tea is water with herbs in it.

The traditional British cuppa is milky and sugary. However, I prefer mine black with no sugar in it. As a kid, I used to see my grandfather drinking it like that and so I did the same. Tea is one of the healthiest of drinks.

Don't tell the Mormons that. I did any their response was that there are 300 poisons in coffee.

Those 300 poisons actually do you some good.

I'm afraid of stained teeth so I put milk in mine. Does it really change the chemistry that much?

I drink coffee and tea but I had a scary experience with coffee about seven years ago. I had a hearing before a tribunal in St. Catherines and I stayed overnight in a motel. In the morning, my client came in with a medium cup of Tims. We then walked to the venue and on the way, I had another medium cup.

While sitting waiting, my heart began to race and when I walked in the corridors to hide the problem. my legs were like rubber. This persisted for about an hour and then eased off long enough for me to go in and make the case which, fortunately, took me only half an hour or so. The heart rate returned to fast forward and continued going on and off for the rest of the day.

I went to a clinic in the evening and found nothing wrong but, the doctor after I related the events, said that the coffee would have done it and that coffee has a half life of eighteen hours so I could expect it to continue until around midnight.

It did, lessening all the time.

I love a good iced coffee on a hot afternoon. It keeps me awake in my work until the doldrums pass. However, I had a sobering experience when I drank a branded ready to drink cappuccino one Saturday morning. I don't know why I did it, but minutes later I was on a roller coaster high! As my energy threatened to burst, I unsheathed a training wooden weapon I own and started to practice some heavy sets (it's a great exercise but one that is very demanding physically. That's why I chose it in this case, to let off some of the "high"). Well, not two minutes into the set and I was swinging vigorously when I hit, well, a part of an anatomy and splintered my cabinet door into the bargain. After patching things up (including myself) I decided not to drink caffeinated beverage before practice and in the mornings.
It gives me a lot of energy, but it deteriorates my judgment (spatial and otherwise) badly.
I still have that iced coffee in the afternoons, however =)

My parents were of the two teaspoons in the percolator makes coffee crowd. They'd have a cup watching the news before bed.
Made the mistake of visiting her last summer with a cup of Starbucks.
OH MY GOD YOU'RE TRYING TO KILL ME!!!!

I can drive non-stop thru the night from Prince George to Terrace, wake up the grandkids and take them to Denny's for breakfast on one cup.
Then BANG. Grampa! Wake up! Wake up!
