Four-year-olds showing debilitating signs of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder should be evaluated by doctors, revised guidelines say.
Previously, recommendations and diagnosing and managing ADHD started with children aged six to 12. Since 2001, emerging evidence pointed to expanding the age range to include preschool-aged children and adolescents, the American Academy of Pediatrics said.
The revised guidelines suggest doctors first prescribe behaviour therapy for preschoolers, and that methylphenidate or Ritalin may be prescribed if that does not significantly improve “and there is moderate-to-severe continuing disturbance in the child’s function,” the group’s 14-member committee said.
Behaviour therapy includes training parents and teachers on techniques to help children manage their anger, such as using positive reinforcement and punishing when a child fails to meet goals.
This is what happens when normal to above average children(in intelligence) don't get enough physical activity and parents use the boob tube as a baby sitter. It's also the result of having the education system flooded with underqualified teachers who are more interested in summers off and the benfits. then there is the money that is being bled out of the system by the bureaucratic parasites at the top. Money that should be allocated to programs for the children is instead going to hire administrative assistants to the deputy consultant of the vice superinendent. Too much is being spent on people who have no impact on a child's education.
It isn't eureka's fairytales that are going to destroy our civilization, it's shit like this. let's put any kid who shows a modicum of curiousity, imagination or independence....hell, any kid who is behaving like a kid... on crank. I'm not talking out of my ass here, as I was one of those kids who was labelled 'hyper' and the teacher wanted me to be put on ritalin. My mom was a psych nurse and told the teacher to go fuck herself...My grandmother essentially told her the same thing, although she was more polite. I've also worked with plenty of kids suffering from FAS as a teacher. i'm a big proponent of streaming, and it's this inclusive shit that is part of the problem. The really smart kids and the really dumb kids begin to act out and get labelled ADHD. The smart kids are bored and the dumb kids...they just don't get it, so they amuse themselves when frustrated.
All this being said. Any individual who suggests to me that a 4 or 5 year old should be put on speed, before you let them run themselves ragged in the gym or playground, needs a solid punch in the head.
