Hey everyone,

So I have a minor fungal infection on my upper back and my upper chest. When I originally went in to see my doctor he prescribed me a week's worth of Apo-Ketoconazole and said if it didn't clear up in a month's time after finishing off the pills to come back.

Well that was in September and I went back in December about it. Its not causing me any health issues. Its more of an aesthetic thing I want to deal with before it gets potentially worse. This time, a different doctor put me on a month's worth of the same anti-biotic. I'm now half way through the dosage (14 pills left!) and have being following the recommendations religiously. I take the pill everyday after my first meal (breakfast or lunch depending on my sleep schedule) and I have been drinking absolutely no alcohol (which sucks with New Year's Eve coming up...).

Anyways, I've noticed that I'm really slow and groggy the first few hours of my day. And its not a lack of sleep either. Ever since finishing final exams I've been home with my parents for the Christmas Break and have been getting 8+ hours of sleep each day. Almost everyday I need a nap after lunch...which I normally never need. Do anti-biotics tend to make you more tired?

Cause this sucks...thankfully I'm done at the beginning of my Term 2 so I'm gonna wait it out. I hope the doctor is right this time though, cause I don't want to go on any more medication.

Many cause drowsiness, hence why you are almost always told not to drive after taking most drugs.

Quote:
The following side effects have been reported by at least 1% of people taking this medication. Many of these side effects can be managed, and some may go away on their own over time.

Contact your doctor if you experience these side effects and they are severe or bothersome. Your pharmacist may be able to advise you on managing side effects.

dizziness
drowsiness
headache
heartburn
nausea
vomiting

Although most of these side effects listed below don't happen very often, they could lead to serious problems if you do not check with your doctor or seek medical attention.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, you're now living on the wet West Coast and probably have just been hit by the West Coast winter disorder....SAD

Yep... has an affect on me. Not extreme like some people but still...

Getting up in the mornings for work is really difficult for me from about mid to late November until mid to late January. I start feeling tired at around 4:00 in the afternoons, my energy level just goes down, regardless of sleep the night before or what/when I eat.

I tend to sleep around 8 hours a night during this time but often feel like I could sleep longer. In the summer months 6 hours is enough and I often wake up even before my alarm goes off.

However, westmanguy, you should let your doctor know about it. It could be the meds, or SAD, or a combination.

Ketoconazole is usually used for any common fungal skin infections as apposed to bacterial infections. It's fungal so therefore you were prescribed an antifungal drug rather than an Antibiotic. The APO part of that name is the generic company that makes it which is Apotex. Comes in a shampoo form as well, known as Nizoral. Had to bath one of my dogs in the stuff this past summer. Worked well too.

Anytime your body is fighting off something you usually feel tired, so that should be the norm. Other stuff like a nausea may arrive as well depending on how sensitive a stomach you have.

Yah, that makes sense.

I think the SAD is definitely a factor but the anti-fungal is a component as well. Its so depressing this time of year. Dark by 4pm, rain, rain, rain. I'm tired by 4:30pm most days...

But soon it'll be February, trees will start blooming, and spring will be here! One hard month left to go. I will admit, even with the tons of snow and overly long winters, I was effected like this in Manitoba. We always had sun most days there.

Yeah, antibiotic can be responsible for making you feel tired. This is because they fight and kill microbes which damages cells in your body. This in turn leads to drowsiness as well as weakness in you.
