I recently joined SparkPeople a website that helps you track nutrition and/or fitness goals. Lately, I've been on a fitness kick, working out at the gym at least 3 times a week but usually 4, for at least 60-120 minutes each time (cardio and strength training).

SparkPeople is a great free site from tracking whatever fitness or nutrition goals you have (also great if you want to lose some weight, it's similar to the Weight Watchers site I've heard but free). It's been interesting to see how many calories, fat, protein, salt you eat daily. So far I've been good with that, but now I can compare how many calories I intake and how many I burn off with exercise. It also has some great "teams", the message board is very helpful and informative, and lots of great articles and health related topics as well.

Anyways just thought I'd share. If you do want to register, give me my props for the referral! My username is CANUCKER08 (of course). :wink:

Healthy Diet Habits- Habit #1

Control Portions

People are getting bigger. That's no secret. Here's something that's not as well-known: our food is getting bigger too. A LOT bigger.

From 1977 to 1997, hamburgers expanded by 23%; a plate of Mexican food got 27% bigger; soft drinks increased by 52%; snacks (potato chips, pretzels, crackers) grew 60%. We're now entering the second generation of overeaters who can't believe that a fast food soft drink used to come in 10 ounce cups. There's actually a frozen entrée that proudly sells itself as "1 Pound of Food," as if its total mass was a benefit.

Are they serious? This is getting ridiculous!

Well, no more... The first step to diet renewal is to regain some control over what goes on your plate. During your Fast Break, you started tracking food and calories to get a clear picture of what your current diet looks like. This week, you're going to focus on Food Portions. With careful measurement, you'll learn exactly how many servings you're eating, then reduce portions until they're more in line with recommended serving sizes.

This will be the habit that can cut the most calories the quickest. You could literally lose weight by doing nothing more than eating single servings of your favorite foods instead of the culinary pile of calories you're normally faced with.

Do you ever feel obligated to finish everything on your plate, even if you're not hungry? You're probably a member of the Clean Plate Club. Formed with good intentions, this concept can cause more harm than good in this time of absurd portions. The American Institute for Cancer Research found that 67% of Americans eat everything on their plates, regardless of size. Problem is, a typical dinner plate holds three serving of spaghetti, not just one. A better strategy is to find ways to put less on your plate to begin with.

Here are some other Portion Control tips:

* Use smaller plates and bowls. There's a proven link between the perceived size of food and appetite.
* Order an appetizer as an entree. Remember to stay away from fried foods though.
* Order from the lunch menu at dinnertime.
* Leftovers are okay. Ask the server to wrap up half your meal before bringing it out.
* Order smaller sizes such as a half-order of pasta or a "petite" cut of meat. Even so, portions may still be hefty. It's not unusual for a "smaller" portion of meat to be an 8-ounce serving.
* Pay attention to what you're eating. You'll eat more if you're mindlessly grazing or staring at the TV.
* Learn to read food labels, but be careful. Serving sizes can be misleading (for example, a can of cola is technically two servings.)

A Quick Note:
As you cut down portions, you may feel a little hungry at first. To offset this temporary hunger without eating more:

* Drink more water
* Eat fiber-loaded foods
* Eat low-calorie foods first
* Eat slowly, put the fork down between bites

Link.

It tracks you're fitness and nutrition. How much calories, fat, protein, carbs, you put into your body daily. It's not only a site for if you want to lose wieght, but for strength training and fitness as well. There are plenty or articles and "teams" you can join, and a members forum as well.

It's free, and since joining a couple of weeks ago, I've lost 10lbs, and its just neat to see how many calories I've burned in total, and for each month, and how many minutes I've exercised since joining, and for each month as well. So far this month alone I've logged over 600 fitness minutes, and since joining less than three weeks ago, I have over 1,500 minutes logged and I'm about to go to the gym right now to add more!

Thanks. I know, I've been gradually building my fitness up since last November and the benefits are showing. I can do more now longer, and my strength and endurance has definitely increased. I used to hate exercising, now I love it. It's a good way to release anxiety too!!

Due to my current inactivity, I have been somewhat embarassed to see my "girlish" figure distort. This is disturbing having conducted a very active life etc.

I have embarked on a simple regimen. Pushing myself from the table.

Avoiding constant snacking etc. Eating salads with "Italian" dressing---which is vinegar/oil mainly. I'm just too old and lazy to embark on a "bootcamp" fitness regimen. My idea of getting in shape is to blow off 300 rds on my private range.

This does not involve a nightcap of calory rich vodka---although tonight I have resorted to tomato juice as a mix. Lots of fresh ground pepper....tasty. It tastes so good I shall shortly have to climb (crawl) the wooden hill to sleep and dream relive past adventures.

I am, but I haven't been there in a few months. I should go back, they really have a good program. It is perfect when you want to maintain a healthy diet with a good regime of exercice.
