Holy Smokes, it's been so long since we've been to a game!!

Tonight the Storm took on the Bobcats of Lloydminster
The hockey was great, the teams were toe to toe and yet again the reffing F'ed it up!
With the officiating being it usual crap for both teams,
the boys managed to play some pretty good hockey for the most part.

With the two teams only one point apart in the standings, this double header weekend is pretty important.

Game 1 tonight, final score!.......

Tomorrow night, game 2! Should be a good one!

Saturday nights game in GP was a wee tad of a chippy affair.
It seems as though a few scores had to be settled from Friday nights game.
There were two reel knock down, drag out fights after the last whistle
where in one our favorite Storm took on and well, kicked the crap out of a much larger opponent.
Then it almost looked like the two head coaches were going to climb the glass and go at it.
Was an interesting night to be sure.
There was some hockey played as well and just like the last back to back weekend between these two teams, it ended in a split.
Final score.......

Tonight the Storm start a four game southern Alberta road trip as they are in Calgary to take on the Mustangs. They then play Okotoks tomorrow, Canmore on Saturday and back to Calgary on Sunday to take on the Canucks. The Okotoks Oilers will be the big test for the Storm, they are first in the southern division and second overall in the AJHL. The last time these two teams met was in Grande Prairie early in the season and the Oilers spanked the Storm 6-1. It is a very different Storm team they will face this time around, but after Saturday nights game, we will be missing a couple players due to suspension.

GO STORM!!!

The Storm bounced back tonight after a 4-3 loss to the Okotoks Oilers on Thursday night. In a fair bit closer game than the score indicated, shots being 39-33 in favor of the Storm,
the Storm put this road trip back into the plus side now at 2-1.

Final score in Canmore tonight......

The Storm closed out their four game southern road trip in Calgary today as they took on the Canucks. The two stars of the game were the goalies from both teams. Amazing save after amazing save kept the game close as the lead changed hands a few times. It all came down to overtime where again both tenders stood on their heads. A great game by Andy Williams of the Storm and James D'Andrea of the Canucks. With only a second left on the clock in overtime, Tanner Fritz of the Storm broke in on net and was hauled down resulting in a penalty shot being awarded to Fritz. The Storm captain made no mistake and ended the game officially at the 5:00 mark of the overtime period.

Final Score.....

That gives the Storm a 3-1 record on this road trip and some momentum as they go into the Christmas break.
Their next Game is December 29th against a visiting Swedish Junior A team, The Malmo Redhawks.
The Storm then get back into league play the following night against the Ft Mac Oil Barons.

$1:
Storm Set to Take on Malmo Redhawks Dec.29
2010 December 19th

The Grande Prairie Storm will be in for a very tough test when they host the Malmo Redhawks in the Canada Games Arena on Wednesday, December 29th at 7 PM in the Peak Energy International Experience.

The Malmo Redhawks Junior organization has been one of the top junior programs in Sweden over the last 15 years and has provided the Swedish Elite League with many players.

"We have been a top team in Sweden with our Junior 20 and played two finals and two semifinals in the last 10 years," said Malmo coach/general manager Roger Ohman, who played pro in North America with the Moncton Hawks of the American Hockey League in 1987-88 after being selected 39th overall by the Winnipeg Jets in the 1985 National Hockey League draft.

"We have a great team this year and have five players on our team that have played for the Swedish National Junior Team - three (born 1992) and two (born 1993)." The players who have played on one of the national teams are goalie Fabian Sivnert; defenceman Viktor Mångs; and forwards Sebastian Dyk, Roger Olsson and Patrick Westerholm.

"Our junior program has developed a lot of great hockey players who have and are playing overseas," said Ohman.

One of the best known to Peace Country hockey fans would be Magnus Pajaarvi-Svensson of the Edmonton Oilers, who was a top 10 draft pick in the National Hockey League in 2009.

He played the 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 seasons with Malmo before joining the Swedish elite league.

Two other former Malmo players were first round selections in the NHL draft. Jesper Mattsson was chosen by the Calgary Flames and Marcus Johansson was picked by the Washington Capitals.

Other NHL draft choices who were at one time part of the Malmo team include:

- Andreas Liljja - Los Angeles Kings, Florida Panthers and Detroit Red Wings

- Kim Johnsson - New York Rangers, Minnesota Wild and Chicago Blackhawks.

- Frans Nielsen - New York Islanders

- Carl Soderberg - St. Louis Blues

- Andreas Thuresson - Nashville Predators

- Patrick Hersley - Los Angeles Kings

- Gustav Nyquist - Detroit Red Wings

Nyquist was also a finalist for the 2009-2010 Hobey Baker Award, which goes to the best collegiate hockey player in the United States. He led the NCAA in points last year.

As the official sponsor of the game, Peak Energy is thrilled to be able to participate. '"We at Peak Energy Services are extremely pleased and honored to be hosting the Peak Energy International Experience," said Senior Branch Manager Marty Herron. "As a Storm sponsor, season ticket holders and supporters of the Grande Prairie community, we are very excited to sponsor this standard of international hockey. In the spirit of sportsmanship and elite competition, we wish good luck to all participants and welcome our Swedish guests to the city of Grande Prairie!"

Storm Coach / GM knows his team is going to be in for a tough test against the Redhawks. "The game against the Malmo Redhawks is a very special opportunity for our players as well as the hockey fans of Grande Prairie," said Mike Vandekamp. "The Redhawks are one of the top Junior Teams in all of Sweden. They have developed many of the future stars who have come out of Sweden. It will be a tough test for our players and a very entertaining game for the fans."

Cost for all seats is $15 prior to December 29 and $17 on game day.

The game on Dec. 29 is part of a double header Christmas holiday package the Storm is offering. On Thursday, Dec. 30 the Storm host the Fort McMurray Oil Barons in a regular season Alberta Junior Hockey League game at 7 p.m. Fans can purchase both the game against Malmo and the Oil Barons game for just $27 for adult seats, $24 for seniors and students and $20 for children.

"The game against Sweden and the doubleheader would make a great stocking stuffer," said Storm business manager Don Moon. "That's pretty reasonable. You could see two of the best Junior A teams in Canada and one of the best junior teams in Sweden for only $27 over two nights."

The game against Malmo will be the first for the Storm against an international team since the 1999-2000 season when they hosted a national junior team from Slovakia.

"It's not every day we get such a special opportunity here in Grande Prairie so hopefully we will get a very large crowd out to support our local boys as they do their best to represent the country of Canada and the City of Grande Prairie," said Vandekamp."

Tickets for the Dec. 29 game vs. Malmo and the special doubleheader package (Malmo game and Fort McMurray Oil Barons game) are on sale at the Crystal Centre Box Office.

I don't feel too bad about missing the rest of the Canada/Norway game tonight as Rosie and I are off to see our local boys take on a team from Sweden, the Malmo Redhawks. Sounds like our boys are going to be in tough against this Malmo team, but I'm sure our boys will make a good showing for the home town crowd. I'll be sure to post some pictures after the game as I'm takin the camera tonight... :D

Last night was a great event in Grande Prairie. The visiting Malmo Redhawks faced off against our own Grande Prairie Storm. The opening ceremony was pretty cool. Each player from both teams were escorted onto the ice by a team captain from one of the many minor hockey teams in the area and their names announced with the player they were escorting. It was a pretty nice touch to this game. Grande Prairie fans came out in force to watch this game, packing the stands with 2357 fans attending.

Now, from what I had heard about this Swedish team, I really thought our boys were going to be in tough. I was just hoping that our boys would be competitive and not get smoked. Nothing could have been further from the truth. The Swedish team did play with a little more skill, they were fancier in their plays and were on the whole, faster. But they were not near as aggressive or as tenacious as the Canadian players. The Storm jumped out to a 4-0 lead early in the second period, but I have to give Malmo credit, they battled back and the score was 4-3 by periods end. The Redhawks tied the game early in the third and that seemed to energize the Storm more than it did the Redhawks. Mitch Fillman of the Storm then scored his hat-trick goal, Josh Juell made it 6-4 and Fillman then notched his 4th and 5th goals of the night. Mitch Fillman had the magic as it seemed that anything he threw at the net went in. It was indeed a fun game to watch last night and I took lotsa pictures..153 to be exact... ...here are a few of them.

Final score.......
