A great game in Grande Prairie last night.

The Storm hosted the Sherwood Park Crusaders Friday and Saturday night. Friday turned out to be a nail biter that ended with the Crusaders winning 2-1 with the Storm goalie getting the second star and the Crusader goalie taking the first star. The Storm were robbed on several "sure" goals by a net minder who was on his game.

Last night, a little different story as the Storm got into the head of the Crusader net minder early and chased him from the net in the first period after scoring three goals. The game was chippy, tough, hard hitting with lots of offence added in. (Well, from the Storm anyway) It got so chippy that in the first period, Colin Dzijacky, the Storm tender, tried to get the rather riled up Pat Terriss, the Crusader goalie, to fight during the cleaning up from another fight. He kept laughing at Terris, curling his lip like he was crying, wiped mock tears from his eyes and then threw his stick down like he was laying down the gauntlet for Terris to come have a pugilist dance...I just about cried I was laughing so hard. Terris then let in the next two shots and was pulled from the game....

A great weekend in Grande Prairie to finish off the regular season for the Storm.

The final two games were against the St. Albert Steel. The boys played two very controlled and technically safe games as they were not going to effect the Storm's final standings. The coach played a lot of the third and forth lines giving the 16-18 year old a fair bit more ice time, while resting a few veterans for the playoff run. It did seem to work as the Storm heavily out shot the Steel over both games and came away with the win on both nights. A 6-4 win on Friday night followed up by a 4-2 victory last night.
The shot difference over the two nights were 92-54 in favor of the Storm.

A few Vids from the Storm site from the weekend....

Game winner from Friday night....

Game winner from Saturday....

And a pretty goal to round out the scoring...

Now, on to the Playoffs.

Looks as though the Storm will be facing the Lloydminster Bobcats in the first round best of 5 series.

Rosie and I already have our playoff ticket packages bought and are ready for a great playoff run by the Storm.

GO STORM!!!

A wee bit of a tussle from Saturday nights game.

The youngest member of the Storm, Kenton Helgesen, dropped the gloves and made a pretty good showing of himself. Not too bad for a kid who's only 16 years old...

The Storm start their 2011 Playoff Run TONIGHT!!!!!

In what could be a very even series filled with tough play, pretty goals and a multitude of pugilist confrontations, The Storm and Bobcats if nothing else should be entertaining. These two teams really don't like each other. The Storm knocked the Bobcats out of the playoffs last year and every game this year was a wild event filled with penalties, hard hits and fights.
In other words, they played good old fashioned hockey!

Game one is in the books and what a game it was. Rosie and I were treated to one of the best all around games the Storm played all season. The were physical, aggressive (without being stupid),
hard working and played a smart game at both ends of the rink.

This was one hell of a good way to start off the playoffs!!!

Final score Game#1......

The boys did what they had to do last night in a hard fought and very rough game. Boy, do these teams not like each other, fights, trash talking (and that's just the coaches) bone shattering hits and a bevy of pretty goals.

Our two favorite players, Mitch Neumeier and Rosie's cousin Taylor Cote, had all the scoring in the first two periods. It was awesome to see those two light the lamp. Mitch was on fire last night scoring a hatrick and all of them were beauty goals. Our tender, Andy Williams, had another very solid game stopping what looked like two or three sure goals. He only allowed two on forty shots, great game.

Final Score Game#2......

BOBCATS FORCE FOURTH GAME
Mon, Feb 28 2011

The first three acts of this playoff production have unfolded as they have the last three seasons.

The Grande Prairie Storm lead the Lloydminster Bobcats 2-1 in a best-of-five Alberta Junior Hockey League North Division quarterfinal.

And with Game 4 planned for Tuesday in Lloydminster, the Storm are hoping Act 4 is the finale in the series as it was in 2009 and 2010.

Monday night the Bobcats defeated the Storm 3-2 to get back in the series after dropping the first two games in Grande Prairie on the weekend.

“It’s disappointing,” Storm coach/general manager Mike Vandekamp said after Monday’s loss. “We didn’t play good enough. When you beat yourself that’s frustrating.”

The Storm had taken a 1-0 lead on a five-on-three powerplay when Mitch Neumeier (photo) scored his fourth in two games at 11:04 of the first, but Jeremie Perron got that one back on the PP at 19:18 after Storm goalie Andy Williams had taken a four-minute spearing penalty.

“There was no need to take a penalty,” Vandekamp said of the Williams infraction. “They had been getting in his face and why wouldn’t they? It was an undisciplined penalty.”

Williams had shut the Bobcats out 4-0 on Friday in Game 1 and was outstanding in a 6-2 win in Game 2 on Saturday and Vandekamp is hoping he, and the rest of the team, get back on track Tuesday.

“I thought we were making soft plays and that gave them life,” said Vandekamp. “We struggled with the puck a lot.”

Perron put the Bobcats up 2-1 on another powerplay goal at 9:55 of the second period and a goal by Michael Heffner at 10:30 of the third turned out to be the winner.

Captain Tanner Fritz made it interesting when he scored on the powerplay at 16:46 of the third. The Storm pulled Williams late in the game, but couldn’t muster any offence with the man advantage.

“The positive is we know we can play a lot better,” said Vandekamp. “Hopefully they will respond and play like we want them to.”

The Bobcats held a 27-25 edge in shots on goal and hit on two of five powerplays, as did the Storm.

Tuesday’s game goes at 7:30 p.m. and can be heard on FREE-FM radio by clicking on the FREE-FM button at top right on this page.
