A friend of mine told me the other day that a European has never lifted the Stanley Cup as captain.

Can anyone confirm or deny that?

No european Captain.. because face it Euro Captains haven't been around that long.. it's relitively a newer thing... 1980's to now...

Lidstrom took over the C in detroit from Yzerman

I can only think of one european captain that isn't swedish; Saku Koivu. Is there any one else?

Jagr? What genious made that queen captain.
Chara makes sense though. I saw him play in Sweden and that guy had captain written all over him (not litteraly of course).

Well, if I had the choice b/w Jagr and Yashin (who was the captain up until his contract was bought out), I'd take Jagr in a heartbeat

He whines and cries whenever something doesn't go his way and stops playing at times. That's not captaijn material. I guess they had to make him captain or he would bitch till they made him one. Here's to you Jagr [hockey]

Yeah making Jagr captain is more about making him happy than actually choosing a worthy captain. He obviously has the skill to dominate games, but he picks his spots. Of course, who are we to say how he treats his teammates in the dressing room or in practice.

I'm sure it's just a matter of time until a European captain does win the cup. Or maybe they all are pansies and don't have the heart to win the cup. I'd say Alfie still has the best chance.
