Quote:
Canucks not Canada's team

The Stanley Cup finals -- the greatest two weeks on the Canadian calendar -- kick off Wednesday night, and it would appear a great many hockey fans want no part of the Vancouver Canucks being called "Canada's team."

Can't say as we blame them.

Heritage Minister James Moore got smacked down by this reality over the weekend when he tweeted the Canucks were now "Canada's team."

It incited one blogger to accuse the Vancouver MP of ignoring the hockey greats of Quebec, polarizing the country, politicizing Canada's game and providing ammunition to the separatists.

All over a dumb tweet.

Plumb their psyches, and it would be a safe bet most Canadians subconsciously don't even want the Canucks to win, even if it is the last Canadian team standing.

The reason is simple. It's not their team.

In fact, it would also be a safe bet more Canadians will be rooting for the Boston Bruins than cheering for Vancouver, even if both have 17 Canadians on their roster.

Vancouver is not one of the fabled Original Six. Boston is.

Outside the international arena -- i.e. the Olympics and the Worlds -- we are very territorial when it comes to this blessed game.

While Sun Media speaks as a collective on national issues, we stay local when it comes to our hockey institutions.

And we never hop on bandwagons.

In Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa and Montreal -- all home to a Sun Media newspaper and an NHL team, and soon to be joined again by the Jets in Winnipeg (and it had better be Jets not Thrashers) -- we bleed for the home team.

How else can anyone possibly explain the loyalty of Toronto's Leaf Nation to a team that has not touched Lord Stanley since prime minister Lester Pearson left politics.

It appears to be an unconditional love.

But it's hardly a logical one.

It's been four years since the Ottawa Senators, the last Canadian team to make it to the finals, choked in five games against the Anaheim Ducks (Anaheim?), and not since 1993 that Patrick Roy and the Montreal Canadians won the Stanley Cup for Habs fans.

Hockey is Canada's game, yes.

But its heart is largely local.

P.S.: Bobby Orr is 63.

Thank christ football's about to start and the radio sports shows are at about 50/50 on what the topic of the day is. It was getting a bit boring when 90% of the show was talking about how bad the Canucks and their fans suck.

Even though I can't disagree. :P

If they change it to Canada's ONLY team, well then I would agree, but the author makes great points. I really doubt many in BC would be rooting for the Flames or Oil if it were them in the final, not a big deal, I don't hate the canucks at all, I just like the Bruins much better :D
