Top 8 hockey movies of all time

Image
The Hanson Brothers are the beloved stars of Slap Shot.

From a cineaste’s perspective, “he shoot, he scores” works on a lot of levels — and sounds a lot better than “he directs, he post-produces.” With the release of Score: A Hockey Musical, we decided it was time to look at the best hockey films every produced.

1. Slap Shot: To not include this over-the-top gem from 1977, would require us to be sent to the penalty box, and feel shame. Full of acerbic lines, the geeky Hanson Brothers and looking like it was filmed in a rinky-dink arena, its cult status deservedly puts it at the top of every hockey film list.

2. Miracle: This is the classic cliché as a coach takes rag-tag team to the top of the world film, yet is probably hockey’s best example of the genre. Made in 2004 it deserve points for Kurt Russell as U.S. coach Herb Brooks and a slow-build focus on team building before the Commie-beating finale.

3. The Rocket: Roy Dupuis’s 2005 portrayal of Maurice Richard is a very good look at this hockey legend that shows a bit of the ups and downs and dark side of the hero’s life.

4. Net Worth: This 1995 made-for-TV film by the CBC told the story of Ted Lindsey versus the owner and the fight that would eventually lead to the creation of the NHL Players Association.

5. Mystery, Alaska: A small town gets excited when their local team takes on the New York Rangers in a televised event in this 1999 feature. Feature Russell Crow and Hank Azaria.

6. Les Boys: This 1997 Quebec hit is another good look at the camaraderie of a believable hockey team.

7. The Mighty Ducks: Yes, the 1992 Emilio Estevez starrer is a bit goofy and cheesy, but it managed to spawn a real hockey team — and two very bad sequels.

8. Youngblood: Patrick Swayze and Rob Lowe stars in this story about a young player whose toughness is tested as he tries to make the Canadian Hockey League.

Honourable Mentions:

The Running Man, 1987: Arnold Schwarzenegger is a contestant on a human hunting game show, and has to defeat hockey-themed bad guys

Sudden Death, 1995: Jean Claude Van Damme takes on terrorists at a Pittsburgh Penguins Stanley Cup playoff game.

Happy Gilmore, 1996: One of Adam Sandler’s best is this story of a frustrated hockey player who turns to golf.

Bon Cop, Bad Cop, 2006: This Canadian-made buddy-cop movie has our heroes solving murders of hockey officials.

DD, you should watch Slap shot and Youngblood, both very good.

Mystery, Alaska was a good movie, but too Hollywood.
Miracle is important for understanding US hockey history.

After, you can graduate to the Rocket and les Boys.

Skip the Ducks. :)

p.s. its nothing compared to the tributes and specials you can find on Youtube. ;)

OMFG!!!!!

Did you just use the "I" word in front of hockey??????????

That other game that they use the hallowed name of hockey to describe, blasphemy is what that is, is not in any way, shape or form....HOCKEY!!!

New law, anyone who uses the "I" word in front of hockey is not only banned from CKA, but they are banished to the gulag of Canada, Ft. McMurray, Alberta!!!!

Back on topic.... :D

Haven't seen a couple of those flics, going to have to "check" them out. PDT_Armataz_01_08

Objectively speaking, Youngblood was a HORRIBLE movie. Only our love for the game, and Cynthia Gibb's tits, make this turkey even remotely watchable.

I'm surprised that no one mentioned "Les Chiefs", a documentary about Quebec senior league fighting hockey and the goons that play there. It's an English language film, so don't let the title frighten you. http://www.leschiefs.com/ It's definitely a lot better film than several of the turkeys on the list.
