Hyack Hyack:
Minnesota at Vancouver

23

WILD (11-7-3) at CANUCKS (9-11-2)

The Vancouver Canucks won't have top defenseman Alexander Edler, who broke a finger blocking a shot on Saturday against the Colorado Avalanche. But they should get some scoring help with the return of left wing Sven Baertschi. He had his first three-point game of his NHL career against the Arizona Coyotes on Nov. 23 but missed the next two games with a foot injury. Playing with Bo Horvat, who leads the Canucks with 15 points, and veteran Alexandre Burrows, Baertschi was a big part of what has been Vancouver's best line of late. "The last eight, nine games our line has been really good," said Baertschi. With Edler out 4-6 weeks after surgery on Monday and regular top-pairing partner Christopher Tanev out at least one more week with a lower body injury, the Canucks will juggle their pairings and are counting on the forwards to help what is now the youngest defense in the NHL, with 22-year-old rookie Troy Stecher on a top pair with Luca Sbisa. "Obviously our D is young so our forwards are going to have to do a little more coming back and we are going to have to rely on our goaltending a little," coach Willie Desjardins said. Vancouver has alternated wins and losses the past 10 games after a 3-2 shootout win in Colorado. "We need to put a string together," defenseman Erik Gudbranson said.

It's going to be real interesting to see how Vancouver does without Edler and Tanev, because if the team doesn't fall apart maybe Benning can start thinking about trades.

The Sedins aren't getting any younger, so unless Bo steps it up to another level yet, a points scoring center who can win face-offs is the big need coming up.

We can cross our fingers and hope concerning say Adam Gaudette's chances in the future, but it would be nice to have something more certain.

What would also be nice would be going into the draft with two firsts and a few seconds or thirds. [hockey] [popcorn]

The one thing we know Benning does well is draft. He's done pretty good with very few chances so far. What I'm thinking is what if rather than being buyers, we're sellers come the trade deadline. Will that bring draft picks?

Miller time anyone

The Canucks win it 5-4 in a game that started slow but ended up being a barn-burner in the last half of the 2nd period and the whole of the 3rd. Back to back PP goals in the 2nd tied the score at 2-2, the Canucks then again scored twice to start the 3rd followed by the Wild scoring twice to tie the game with just over 5 minutes to play. Baertschi finally scored the winning goal with 21/2 minutes to play to give the Canucks their first back to back wins since the first 4 games of the season. Thursday has Anaheim coming to town followed by the Leafs on Saturday.

Anaheim at Vancouver

DUCKS (11-8-4) at CANUCKS (10-11-2)

The Canucks will try to stay on a roll, but their young defense is expecting a different challenge from the Ducks' big forwards. The Canucks defeated the Minnesota Wild 5-4 on Tuesday despite missing top defenseman Alexander Edler, who broke his finger Saturday, and his regular top-pair partner Christopher Tanev, who remains out because of an ankle injury. It was the first time they have won consecutive games since opening the season with four straight victories, but the hard-forechecking Ducks might be harder on what is now the youngest defense in the NHL. "If I am stationary they are obviously going to take advantage of my size," said 5-foot-10 rookie Troy Stecher, who had two assists against the Wild. "Use my feet, make sure I am skating. If I am doing that it makes it harder to hit me." After struggling to score during a nine-game losing streak (0-8-1) through Nov. 7, the Canucks have 31 goals while going 6-3-1 in the past 10 games. Second-line center Bo Horvat leads the Canucks with eight goals and 16 points and credits chemistry with linemates Alexandre Burrows, who has five points the past five games, and Sven Baertschi, who returned after missing two games to score the winning goal against the Wild. "Just knowing where each other is, knowing what we have to do each and every game to be successful," Horvat said.

Henrik's goal with 7 minutes left to play really brought the team alive, only to be brought down when the Ducks scored with only 21/2 minutes to play bringing the score to 3-1. Vancouver next hosts Toronto Saturday afternoon, puck drop at 4:00pm PT.

Oh right...forgot about that.

Labate's still up here from Utica, isn't he? Maybe he needs to play on Saturday.

If not, maybe it's time for Gudbranson to earn his paycheck. Or should I say payback check.

To Hell with the PTB. They'll screw our guys over regardless, like they always do. Might as well do the crime if one must do the time.

Toronto at Vancouver

25

MAPLE LEAFS (10-9-4) at CANUCKS (10-12-2)

Vancouver is more worried about re-establishing momentum after a 3-1 loss to the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday than the earlier loss at Toronto. Vancouver had won consecutive games for the first time since starting the season with four straight wins. The Canucks are 6-4-1 in their past 11 games but lost nine straight from Oct. 22- Nov. 7. "We're trying to get back to where we want to be," forward Brandon Sutter said. "We've been playing good enough to get ourselves back after a bit of a tough stretch through October. A win goes a long way. We'll look to do that." Goalie Ryan Miller will make his third straight start despite giving up six goals on 42 shots in Toronto and seven goals in his past two games. The Canucks are focused on doing a better job in front of their goalie against the Maple Leafs, who are tied with the Pittsburgh Penguins for fourth in the NHL at 3.04 goals per game. "It's going to be a pretty tight-checking game," Sutter said. Toronto also defeated Vancouver twice last season, ending a seven-game losing streak in Vancouver that dated to 2004. "We haven't played great against Toronto the last couple times," coach Willie Desjardins said. "We've got to find a way to play better. That's all we're looking at."

He put in a good effort, got a little tired at the end, but good on him for stepping up.

If this game is representative of a "bad blood" feud than the NHL has finally become a womens league. Very little emotion and one lukewarm hug-fest.

At least the Canucks had someone that would go. Oiler fans were wanting Kadri carried off the ice Tuesday night. After all their so much bigger as a team, and it was their worst effort of the year, talk about no interest at all.

If it would have been last year the ice would have been littered with sweaters.

Woo hoo, I knew I could relax as soon as they went into overtime.

"Ha ha," I said to the television set, "you're in Canucks country now Maple laughs."

Like Erik G was saying before the game, 2 points is the best revenge.

This wasn't bad either though.
