Two worse Prime Minister's in Canada's history Trudeau and Mulroney.

Trudeau sold us down the river with multiculturalism; and

Mulroney just sold us... to the United States. NAFTA

What say you... or does everyone agree.

True, Chretien just didn't give a shit about Canada period. He was a Quebecer first, and an anti-American.

...but at least he didn't sell Canada's resources down the river with a bad trade agreement like Mulroney.

Can't really disagree with either Trudeau or Mulroney, but I think Diefenbaker could also be a pretty good candidate.

And as for Chretien...

Does it surprise you that there's such a thing as a corrupt politician?

Also, while being corrupt, the man was still a brilliant politician and not half bad all things considered...

Can't disagree with you more on Diefenbaker.

Diefenbaker established the Canadian Bill of Rights, Royal Commission on Health Services Agricultural Rehabilitation and Development Act.

The problem with these kinds of threads is it's not so much about historical "worse" then it's which one people don't "like". Historians have a great mantra about Prime Ministers (and Presidents) in that they have two constiuents - the contemporary public and the historians that examine later. The two don't always share the same conclusion.

The interesting thing is that many political historians are starting to raise Mulroney's political stature in history. Whether the general public agrees? That's another story.

American academia also has a list for their presidents. It's categorized into sections like "great", "near great", etc and every couple of years its reevaluated to take new factors into account like signficance and temporal distance. A Canadian version of this kind of thing would be interesting (not a one time thing like Granatstein's work).

$1:
Mulroney just sold us... to the United States. NAFTA

Here's a rarity in Canadian politics - the 1988 election was largely an one issue event and last time I checked the Canadian people awarded the FTA with a Conservative majority. Mulroney's not entirely culpable - that also falls onto the Canadian public

I think you better check your history book... it was Mulroney who gave us and signed into law the Multicultural Act.. Trudeau never believed in the hyphenated Canadian..
He professed we are all equal....
Trudeau was the best PM ever! ever! and thank God for that..

Disagree on both. That said, I'm afraid I don't know enough about previous PMs to come up with 2. If Trudeau and Mulroney are our worst, we're doing very well.

In 1971, Canada was the first country in the world to adopt multiculturalism as an official policy. By so doing, Canada affirmed the value and dignity of all Canadian citizens regardless of their racial or ethnic origins, their language, or their religious affiliation. The 1971 Multiculturalism Policy of Canada also confirmed the rights of Aboriginal peoples and the status of Canada's two official languages.

Canadian multiculturalism is fundamental to our belief that all citizens are equal. Multiculturalism ensures that all citizens can keep their identities, can take pride in their ancestry and have a sense of belonging. Acceptance gives Canadians a feeling of security and self-confidence, making them more open to, and accepting of, diverse cultures. The Canadian experience has shown that multiculturalism encourages racial and ethnic harmony and cross-cultural understanding, and discourages ghettoization 8O , hatred, discrimination and violence.

Exactly what part of that has failed? I hear a lot of moaning about how bad Multiculturalism is, but never any Evidence of its' badness.

In 1971, Canada became the first country in the world to adopt an official Multiculturalism Policy. This policy provided for programs and services to support ethnocultural associations and to help individuals overcome barriers to their full participation in Canadian society. In 1982, the multicultural character of Canada gained constitutional recognition in Section 27 of the newly adopted Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. It specified that the courts were to interpret the Charter "in a manner consistent with the preservation and enhancement of the multicultural heritage of Canada". By virtue of this section of the Charter, Canada became a constitutional multicultural state.

Kemore is wrong again. His hatred for this policy should be directed to the POS PET, but we all know this won’t happen.

What is being canadian first? Canada itself is a clusterfuck of ideologies, religions, and cultures. Not one part of Canada is the same. We all hate each other.
