As we all know we have a Charter of Rights and Freedoms. We tend to these days in my opinion be concerned with our rights and not our duties and responsibilities as citizens. My question is, would you support a Charter of Duties and Responsibilities based on the premis below:

Canada is a Democracy and everyone in Canada is entitled to protection by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. in order to protect these Freedoms Canadians have Duties and Responsiblities defined in this charter.

Feel free to post any Duties/Responsibilities that you feel should be included

Interesting concept! Never see anything remotely like this ever happeneing though. Not in this self-indulgent me first society we live in.

Unsurprisingly given what is going on the first duty in it for me would be to VOTE!!!! Even if you just go in and spoil the ballot. Too many people have given their lives to protect that right for people to take it as lightly as they do.

It is an interesting suggestion, but Wullu’s assertion is correct: too many people in this culture of victimization scream “me” first (and, of course, accept little personal accountability for anything) and often don’t think about a larger societal picture, unless it directly impacts them. A true paradigm shift is needed and then, perhaps, we could find a better balance between the individual and the collective.

Amazingly enough the book Starship Troopers ( it is NOTHING like the foolish movie ) spends most of text covering exactly this. What are the responsibilities of the citizen in a society? Who should hold those responsibilties and when? If you ever get the chance read through the book. I don't agree with it all but it will make you think about things in a different light.

And oh, even thought the author was American, he apparently knew his Canadian history. The training camps they went to were named after Canadian VC receipients as were some of the ships......

Actually, I’m a big fan of Heinlein. You’re right; Starship Troopers is a good book!

manditory military service wouldn't be a bad idea. Serve as a reserve for two years during highschool.

ACtually what I personally would like to see for military service is two years after High School or if you go to University 4 years in the reserves.

I think the problem with a charter of Duties is there is too much room for interpretation.

The millitary structure is not the best enviroment for amny Canadians, as well if yo are in the millitary durring war time you could be ordered to fight, unless of course your family has the right connections. This means that if you opose a war moraly you have to fight in it, you can not stay at home campaigning and protseting, which may be your duty as a free citizen.

Better yet, do what a lot of European countries do. After high school, you have to do some mandatory military service. If you are opposed to that, then you can do community service for the same amount of time.

I agree, the government can make any law it wants to as long as it is in accordance with the constitiution.

I'm all for manditory military service. It would certainly clean up our streets and would also teach a trade for the young teens today that are too lazy to look for a good paying job!

Why do you have to look for a good paying job, isn't paying your bills enough?

Canada has never had permanent manditory millitay service. we have only had the draft twice once when are millitary resources were drain by bad British leadership in the Netherlands and once when the Borden government after realected in an unjust election who used the same unjust election system in a reforendum on the draft.
