Curiously, the mainstream media is reporting *now* that the fighting in January made victims out of the Muslims and this makes an excuse for their actions this week. However, back in January it was reported that the fighting that occured then was more or less mutual.

Nigeria, like Sudan is 2 countries rolled into 1. One, a middle income, sort of decent nation (similar to North Sudan), or a poor man's south Africa.

Then there is the North of Nigeria, which is basically Somalia, with a government, but not much of one.

Unfortunately the country itself is run by northerners. Most Christians/Atheists/Animist want nothing to do with the Muslims, they want to break off from the North, they consider themselves hostage.

You can thank Britain for that one.

Unfortunately most know what happens when a country's Muslims reach 30% of the total population...And that is what has happened over the last 30 years in Nigeria. A Muslim man will marry 4 wives, and have 5-8 children per wife. The Muslim population is now growing, rapidly.

It continues to encroach into the south, and as muslims arrive, so does the need for Sharia, Islamic schools, and so on. This is basically what is happening now. This place, “Jos”, is dead centre in the middle of the country. Within 20 years, Jos has turned from mainly Christian city, to 50%-50%. The way things are going, Christians are fleeing for dear life, and it will be another Islamized Nigerian state by the end of this decade.

As Nigerian northerners say “we shall not stop until we dip the Koran into the sea”

What Nigeria needs is outside help to allow it to peacefully partition in half itself like Sudan will next year. That’s the only way to stop the “spread”.

No, it isn't. Another way is to drive the Muslims back into the desert or exterminate them - which is only fair as that is precisely what they have planned for everyone else.

Do you think the Nigerians are going to do this on there own?

If the UN can get off its dead ass and do something positive like
help facilitate this partition perhaps some Nigerian lives can be
saved. The moslems would be free to practice Sharia law, ie, stoning
women, female mutilation, honour killings chapping off hands and so
on and the Christians can do their thing.

The crusades were then, this is now. The problem is that if we frame the conflict as Muslim vs Christian, we'll be putting ourselves into the same box the Muslims do. The west fought long and hard to separate church and state and have freedom of and from religion. So the fight is secularism vs religious fanaticism, of all kinds. Christians aren't exempt from the latter. The problem is that it's hard to rouse people up with secularism, it speaks to the intellect while fundamentalism speaks to some very basic emotions. So we do have to be on guard in the west about creeping religion taking over, and that again includes all those fundamentalist Christian nutbars.

I think the French have about the right attitude - they seem to actually be passionate about their secularism. While I don't agree with banning Burkas, I do agree on taking a stand against extremists. I'm worried that Canadians are just to apathetic about it, or that they will default to "God keep this land" Christian crap. (I'm not knocking Christianity as a belief here, but political action disguised as Christianity.) The terrorists will really have won if they manage to push us back into that little box again.
