Pakistan shares intelligence with India on probable terror attack

Image

An intelligence input about a major terror strike in Kashmir, reportedly shared by Pakistan, has prompted a high alert in the valley, a top security official said here on Sunday.

The input talks about Al Qaeda's plan to carry out the attack in Awantipora area of South Kashmir's Pulwama district, either before or during the Amarnath Yatra beginning on July 1, to avenge the killing of Zakir Musa, chief of Ansar Ghazwatul Hind (AGH), who was shot dead recently in an encounter with security forces, the official said.

"The input has been shared with all security forces engaged in counter insurgency operations in the state. A high alert has been sounded, although security is already on maximum alert because of the upcoming Amarnath Yatra," said the official on condition of anonymity.

The route taken by the pilgrims to Amarnath holy cave in the mountains passes through the Awantipora.

The input has been shared with the Army, CRPF, BSF, ITBP, SSB and the state police.

"About 450 additional companies of central armed police forces (CAPF) are being deployed for the overall security of the upcoming Amarnath Yatra. This is in addition to the already in place security grid engaged in anti-militancy operations," he said.

"The input says Al Qaeda is planning the attack to avenge the killing of Zakir Musa, chief of AGH, a proclaimed affiliate of the global terror network. There is no question of any lowering of guard even if the input hadn't been there," added the official.

On February 14, Pulwama district was witness to a ghastly terror attack on a CRPF convoy, in which 40 personnel were killed.

The attack had triggered military tensions between India and Pakistan.

‘PM Imran set to undertake maiden US trip in July’

By Our CorrespondentPublished: June 28, 2019

Image

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan is scheduled to travel to the United States in the third week of July on a maiden visit where he would have first face-to-face sitting with President Donald Trump, The Express Tribune has learnt.

Official sources confirmed on Friday that the prime minister would begin his five-day trip from July 20.

The trip, originally planned in June, was postponed because of the PM’s prior domestic engagements, ie federal budget 2019.
Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi on Thursday told reporters that a meeting between PM Imran and Trump was expected soon. He, however, did not share the date of the PM’s visit.

Qureshi said PM Imran would be visiting Washington on the invitation of President Trump, who wanted to discuss important regional issues.

This would be the first high-level engagement between the two countries under the Trump administration’s tenure, and comes at a time when talks between the US and Afghan Taliban are thought to have entered decisive phase.

Relations between Pakistan and the US have remained strained since Trump took charge of the White House. Trump, highly critical of Pakistan’s role in Afghanistan and overall war on terror, suspended the security and other assistance to Pakistan.

Last year he and PM Imran had a war of words on Twitter after the US president repeated his allegations against Pakistan for “playing a double game”.

Pakistani officials, however, feel that direct interaction between PM Imran and Trump can help address some of the misgivings.

There is a sense in the government circles that Trump might have been misled by hardliners within his administration.

PM Imran also has his own take and vision on Afghanistan and some of the other regional issues.

Officials said the prime minister will take this opportunity to convey both Pakistan’s concerns as well as willingness to seek better relationship with the US.

Also, the unconventional style of both PM Imran and Trump may add a new flavour to the upcoming meeting between the two leaders.

Illustrating Trump's hairstyle was more difficult than painting his face on a small vase, says artist Hanifullah

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan will present a special portrait to US President Donald Trump during his maiden visit to Washington, aiming to reset the strained bilateral relations between the two states, later this month.

Dispelling speculations about the trip, Pakistan’s Foreign Office and the White House have now confirmed that the two leaders would meet on July 22.

The portrait of the US president has been made on a camel skin vase, which according to artist Hanifullah Khan, is one of the oldest crafts in Multan.

The task was commissioned to the prominent artist by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to enhance bilateral and cultural ties between the two countries.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, Hanif said the special task, assigned to him by the ministry's Lok Virsa department, was challenging but an honour for him.

He said illustrating Trump’s hairstyle was a quite difficult and more painstaking than painting his face on the small vase.

“It requires a lot of rigorous work, and special colours are used which last up to 30 to 40 years,” he added.

Hanif, who has been painting for years, said he also made portraits of Saudi Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman and Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on these vases.

How ISI’s intelligence sharing helped CIA track Osama

ISLAMABAD: A top retired security official said that ISI had no information of Osama bin Laden’s (OBL) presence in Abbottabad, and what Prime Minister Imran Khan recently said in a television interview in Washington was apparently concerning Pakistani agency’s intelligence input which had helped CIA reach a close associate of OBL.

Talking to The News, on condition of not being named, the retired officer said that Pakistan’s position remains unchanged i.e. ISI had no knowledge of OBL’s presence in Pakistan.

Prime Minister Imran Khan had said that the “ISI provided a lead” to the CIA that helped the US track down and kill the terror group al-Qaeda’s chief in 2011. Khan’s statement caused a controversy and many politicians here criticised Imran Khan for making this claim.

It is said that the prime minister’s statement that the “ISI provided a lead” is possibly a reference to the already known fact that Pakistan had shared details of a mobile number that was used by a close associate of OBL — Abu Ahmed Ali Kuwaiti.

Even leaked parts of Abbottabad Commission report had revealed that the arrest of Khalid Bin Attash (an al-Qaeda member who was involved in the pre-9/11 attacks such as on USS Cole and the embassies in Africa) in ‘2002’ from Karachi led to the first major breakthrough – he was the one who identified Abu Ahmed Ali Kuwaiti (the Kuwaiti born Pakistani who was OBL’s right hand man and courier and the man who led the Americans to Bin Laden).

The report, according to a story published in Dawn, had disclosed that during the search for this man (Kuwaiti), CIA had provided four phone numbers between “2009 to Nov 2010” to Pakistan but without any details as to who they were searching for. A story added that these numbers “most of the time remained off” but while the ISI kept the CIA in the loop it did so “without knowing the context and to whom these numbers belonged”.

“Now in retrospect, the commission report confirms Attash’s disclosure – Kuwaiti was OBL’s right hand man,” the story read.

For the same reason, former CIA Director General David Petraeus said a few days back that he is "convinced" that the Pakistani intelligence agencies did not know Osama bin Laden (OBL) was in Pakistan.

"We are quite convinced that the ISI, Pakistani intelligence, no one else knew that OBL was there in Pakistan. They were not harbouring him or hiding him or anything like that. We have very good insights on that. We probably differ with those who said that the Pakistanis were allowing him to live in that particular compound in Abbottabad," he said.

A few years after the US Abbottabad episode, The News while quoting an unnamed leading security official had disclosed, “The US intelligence had recorded the telephonic conversation between the then Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and ISI Chief Lt General Ahmad ShujaPasha soon after the May 2, 2011 Abbottabad assault, which actually had made Washington to trust Pakistani establishment’s view that it was not in knowledge of Osama bin Laden’s presence there.”

The leading security official of the country in an informal talk with The News had claimed that Washington would never had trusted Islamabad and its military establishment here if they themselves had not heard what was discussed between the Army Chief and the ISI Chief soon after they were informed of the Abbottabad attack.

It was reported by this newspaper that both Kayani and Pasha had expressed their shock over the presence of Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad.

And our Khan just wrote an article in NYT

Imran Khan: The World Can’t Ignore Kashmir. We Are All in Danger.

If the world does nothing to stop the Indian assault on Kashmir and its people, two nuclear-armed states will get ever closer to a direct military confrontation.

By Imran Khan
Mr. Khan is the prime minister of Pakistan.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — After I was elected prime minister of Pakistan last August, one of my foremost priorities was to work for lasting and just peace in South Asia. India and Pakistan, despite our difficult history, confront similar challenges of poverty, unemployment and climate change, especially the threat of melting glaciers and scarcity of water for hundreds of millions of our citizens.

I wanted to normalize relations with India through trade and by settling the Kashmir dispute, the foremost impediment to the normalization of relations between us.

On July 26, 2018, in my first televised address to Pakistan after winning the elections, I stated we wanted peace with India and if it took one step forward, we would take two steps. After that, a meeting between our two foreign ministers was arranged on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session in September 2018, but India canceled the meeting. That September I also wrote my first of three letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi calling for dialogue and peace.

Unfortunately, all my efforts to start a dialogue for peace were rebuffed by India. Initially, we assumed that Mr. Modi’s increasingly hard-line positions and his rhetoric against Pakistan were aimed to whip up a nationalist frenzy among the Indian voters with an eye on the Indian elections in May.

a young Kashmiri man carried out a suicide attack against Indian troops in Indian-occupied Kashmir. The Indian government promptly blamed Pakistan.

We asked for evidence, but Mr. Modi sent Indian Air Force fighter planes across the border to Pakistan. Our Air Force brought down an Indian plane and captured the pilot. We struck back to signal we could defend ourselves but chose not to strike a target that would cause loss of life. I made a conscious decision to show that Pakistan had no intent of aggravating the conflict between two nuclear-armed states. We returned the captured Indian pilot, with no preconditions.

On May 23, after Mr. Modi’s re-election, I congratulated him and hoped we could work for “peace, progress and prosperity in South Asia.” In June, I sent another letter to Mr. Modi offering dialogue to work toward peace. Again, India chose not to respond. And we found out that while I was making peace overtures, India had been lobbying to get Pakistan placed on the “blacklist” at the intergovernmental Financial Action Task Force, which could lead to severe economic sanctions and push us toward bankruptcy.

Evidently Mr. Modi had mistaken our desire for peace in a nuclear neighborhood as appeasement. We were not simply up against a hostile government. We were up against a “New India,” which is governed by leaders and a party that are the products of the Hindu supremacist mother ship, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, or the R.S.S.

The Indian prime minister and several ministers of his government continue to be members of the R.S.S., whose founding fathers expressed their admiration for Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler. Mr. Modi has written with great love and reverence about M.S. Golwalkar, the second supreme leader of the R.S.S., and has referred to Mr. Golwakar as “Pujiniya Shri Guruji (Guru Worthy of Worship).”

Mr. Modi’s guru wrote admiringly about the Final Solution in “We, Our Nationhood Defined,” his 1939 book: “To keep up the purity of the race and its culture, Germany shocked the world by her purging the country of the Semitic Races — the Jews. National pride at its highest has been manifested here. Germany has also shown how well-nigh impossible it is for races and cultures, having differences going to the root, to be assimilated into one united whole, a good lesson for us in Hindustan for us to learn and profit by.”

I had hoped that being elected prime minister might lead Mr. Modi to cast aside his old ways as the chief minister of the Indian state of Gujarat, when he gained global notoriety for the 2002 pogrom against local Muslims on his watch and was denied a visa to travel to the United States under its International Religious Freedom Act — a list of visa denials that included associates of Slobodan Milosevic.

Mr. Modi’s first term as prime minister had been marked by lynching of Muslims, Christians and Dalits by extremist Hindu mobs. In Indian-occupied Kashmir, we have witnessed increased state violence against defiant Kashmiris. Pellet-firing shotguns were introduced and aimed at the eyes of young Kashmiri protesters, blinding hundreds.

On Aug. 5, in its most brazen and egregious move, Mr. Modi’s government altered the status of Indian-occupied Kashmir through the revocation of Article 370 and 35A of the Indian Constitution. The move is illegal under the Constitution of India, but more important, it is a violation of the United Nations Security Council resolutions on Kashmir and the Shimla Agreement between India and Pakistan.

And Mr. Modi’s “New India” chose to do this by imposing a military curfew in Kashmir, imprisoning its population in their homes and cutting off their phone, internet and television connections, rendering them without news of the world or their loved ones. The siege was followed by a purge: Thousands of Kashmiris have been arrested and thrown into prisons across India. A blood bath is feared in Kashmir when the curfew is lifted. Already, Kashmiris coming out in defiance of the curfew are being shot and killed.

If the world does nothing to stop the Indian assault on Kashmir and its people, there will be consequences for the whole world as two nuclear-armed states get ever closer to a direct military confrontation. India’s defense minister has issued a not-so-veiled nuclear threat to Pakistan by saying that the future of India’s “no first use” policy on nuclear weapons will “depend on circumstances.” Similar statements have been made by Indian leaders periodically. Pakistan has long viewed India’s “no first use” claims with skepticism.

With the nuclear shadow hovering over South Asia, we realize that Pakistan and India have to move out of a zero-sum mind-set to begin dialogue on Kashmir, various strategic matters and trade. On Kashmir, the dialogue must include all stakeholders, especially the Kashmiris. We have already prepared multiple options that can be worked on while honoring the right to self-determination the Kashmiris were promised by the Security Council resolutions and India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.

Through dialogue and negotiations, the stakeholders can arrive at a viable solution to end the decades of suffering of the Kashmiri people and move toward a stable and just peace in the region. But dialogue can start only when India reverses its illegal annexation of Kashmir, ends the curfew and lockdown, and withdraws its troops to the barracks.

It is imperative that the international community think beyond trade and business advantages. World War II happened because of appeasement at Munich. A similar threat looms over the world again, but this time under the nuclear shadow.

Imran Khan is the prime minister of Pakistan.

Do you guys know who killed Gandhi? A worker from RSS, a rightwing Hindu organization, which current Indian PM Modi hails from.

------------

As ambassador for the people of Kashmir I am going to expose the oppression & gross human rights violations of the fascist Modi regime against the brave Kashmiri people. The western world doesn’t understand the RSS agenda inspired by Nazi Germany.

The Pakistani nation has also let the world know about the Nazi-style takeover of India by the RSS-BJP's Hindu Supremacist ideology & the danger it poses not only to the region but the world.

The Hindu Supremacist Modi Govt poses a threat to Pakistan as well as to the minorities in India & in fact to the very fabric of Nehru & Gandhi's India. To understand the link between Nazi ideology & the ethnic cleansing & genocide ideology of RSS-BJP Founding Fathers just Google

The fascist, Hindu Supremacist Modi Govt should know that while armies, militants & terrorists can be defeated by superior forces; history tells us that when a nation unites in a freedom struggle & does not fear death, no force can stop it from achieving its goal.

The curfew, crackdown & impending genocide of Kashmiris in IOK is unfolding exactly acc to RSS ideology inspired by Nazi ideology. Attempt is to change demography of Kashmir through ethnic cleansing. Question is: Will the world watch & appease as they did Hitler at Munich?

I’ve heard of ambulance-chasing lawyers but Pakistani jurists take this activity to a whole new level:

$1:
Three patients died when hundreds of lawyers attacked a hospital in Lahore during a furious dispute with doctors.
Video showed the lawyers ransacking wards at the cardiac hospital, beating up staff and smashing equipment.
As panic spread, doctors and paramedics hid, leaving patients unattended, including those in a critical state.
Riot police fired tear gas to disperse the lawyers and more than 20 arrests were made. It took more than two hours to restore order, officials said. The lawyers had been protesting over the alleged mistreatment of some of their colleagues by hospital staff last month.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-50757383

Imran’s nephew was involved, apparently:

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-50779302

Don’t expect swift justice on that front.

$1:

The lawyers who attacked the Punjab Institute of Cardiology in Lahore this week did what is expected of them. Expected by whom? By their colleagues, by their bars, by their community, and by our society at large. It was in the fitness of things. They attacked judges and nothing happened; they attacked cops and nothing happened; they attacked citizens and nothing happened — so they just upped the ante and attacked a hospital. Guess what will happen?

...This is anarchy.

It is anarchy because the lawyers have lost their legal and moral moorings and the bar and bench cannot do much; it is anarchy because the police has lost its capacity and willingness to secure life and property from being destroyed by the lawyers and the government cannot do much; it is anarchy because the government has lost the resolve to build a police force that can maintain law and order against all odds and the state cannot do much; and it is anarchy because the state is held hostage by its own severe inadequacies and deficiencies and the citizens cannot do much.

$1:
The raiders of PIC walked many kilometres in plain sight through the heart of the city with the clear intent of unleashing violence but the ‘feared’ Punjab police could do nothing more than putting up feeble resistance. When the inspector general of police of the largest province cannot save a big hospital in the centre of the city from being ransacked then not much hope is left for anything else. This is not mere lawlessness, or unruliness or disorderliness….

This is anarchy.
No.
This is the price of doing business.

As brutal dictators go, Musharraf was a likeable enough chap, not nearly as terrifying in person as his puritanical predecessor, Zia-ul-Haq, and with even a fondness for whisky - Jon Stewart found him much less trouble on the Daily Show set than Hugh Grant - but he did stage a coup after all and, like Zia, killed a former civilian PM. I would have preferred a prison term. Overall, it is good news for Pakistan.
