Former Canadian diplomat detained in China: Sources

SHANGHAI/BEIJING (Reuters) - A former Canadian diplomat has been detained in China, two sources said on Tuesday, and his current employer, the International Crisis Group, said it was seeking his prompt and safe release.

Michael Kovrig’s detention comes after police in Canada arrested the chief financial officer of China’s Huawei Technologies Co Ltd [HWT.UL] on Dec. 1 at the request of U.S. authorities, a move that has infuriated Beijing.

It was not immediately clear if the cases were related, but the arrest of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou in Vancouver has stoked fears of reprisals against the foreign business community in China.

“International Crisis Group is aware of reports that its North East Asia Senior Adviser, Michael Kovrig, has been detained in China,” the think-tank said in a statement.

“We are doing everything possible to secure additional information on Michael’s whereabouts as well as his prompt and safe release,” it added.

China’s Foreign Ministry and Ministry of Public Security did not respond immediately to questions faxed about Kovrig’s detention.

The exact reason for the detention, which was made sometime early this week, according to the sources, was not immediately clear.

The Canadian embassy declined to comment, referring queries to Ottawa.

The fucking c*nts are holding him hostage.

Well at least all the waiting is over and we now know what the game is going to be.

You arrest one of ours, we arrest one of yours, you hurt one of ours, we hurt one of yours, you imprison one of ours we "accidentally" kill a couple of hundred of yours.

For far to long we've we been fed the Chinese propaganda that they'd changed with the death of Mao and the institution of a free market economy and they're now a much kinder, gentler, totalitarian state who's friends with everyone.

I hate to disabuse that thought but, this is the same communist dictatorship that ousted the gang of 4 and replaced them with formerly deposed long march veterans and who, other than the desire for a free market economy are the same assholes who killed thousands upon thousands during the Tienanmen Square protests and are trying to force every country within South East Asia to bow to their whims.

Maybe it's time to stop pretending that the Chinese gov't is our friend because if they were they wouldn't be allowing the wholesale shipping of fentanyl into the west, they wouldn't be allowing their security services to launder their drug money in our casino's and they sure as hell wouldn't be arresting our citizens in retaliation for us doing what is within our legal rights.

We’re going to be collateral damage here. Meng’s arrest has already provoked widespread indignation in China so their govt can’t back down even if it wanted to.

And the Douchebag in Charge (Trump) had to balls to say he would deal with China to resolve this issue.

$1:
“If I think it’s good for what will be certainly the largest trade deal ever made, which is a very important thing -- what’s good for national security -- I would certainly intervene, if I thought it was necessary,” Trump said Tuesday in an interview with Reuters.

YOU FUCKING PUT US IN THIS FUCKING POSITION, ASSHOLE!

The US Department of Justice doesn't seem to give a shit about President Trump supposedly being in charge. They're doing whatever the fuck they want to do and they're effectively unaccountable to anyone including Congress.

Trump has also sewn the defence's argument that Ms. Wanzhou's arrest is Political.

No, he's not. He's making her potential release political and if he does anything with this then the Democrats will surely accuse him of some sort of misdeed.

Best he stays out of this one.

It's not the Democrats, it's the Chinese he needs to worry about. He has signaled to them that he can do something about it if they give the US a good trade deal.

China and the rule of law are unacquainted. It's the Communist party that calls the shots as far as justice (and the media) goes, and Trump has just told the Chinese People that this arrest is no different than China holding this former Canadian ambassador hostage.

I agree, he should sit this one out.

I hear the Chinese are our second biggest trading partner now. That may just be in BC. I forget where I heard it. But whatever...

'got along without you before I met you
gonna get along without you now.'

That's the way I look at it. Be nice to get all our property back.
