A meeting of Syrian opposition figures in Istanbul ended late on Saturday with the election of a 25-member National Salvation council composed of Islamists, liberals and independents.
Look what happened to the liberals and independents who worked with the Islamists in Iran, formerly one of the most egalitarian and secular societies in the ME after Turkey. In Egypt, the Muslim Brotherhood and their friends are now coming into conflict with their former secular allies....implementing Islamic law is what they are pushing for. Libya also finds itself in the same boat...or garbage scow.. with the Islamists(some with connections to Al Killya) calling for similar measures.
These alliances that the secularists are making with the Islamists are doomed for failure. It's a deal with the devil, and the devil always wins because heknows no limits. We can go further back in history and look at eastern Europe and how the communistst partisans turned on their liberal allies. We can look on Germany and see how the NSDAP turned on their Conservative allies, who thought they could control the smaller fringe party. Even further back, the Russian Revolution demonsrtrated how the Bolsheviks were able to co-opt the revolution and out maneuver the Mensheviks, who were mainly social democrats and liberals and out numbered them.
Arab society is also enamoured with the Strongman, which doesn't bode well for a liberal democreacy(by anyone's stretch of the imagination) taking root in any of their nations. Whomever can do you the most immediate damage, seems to be the one you rally behind. Just my two cents on the ME and what likely lays in store for the region and the world. Out of the frying pan and into the fire.
