Incredible.

It's almost like the UN thinks it needs to fade into irrelevance faster than it already is.

It is getting harder and harder to take the UN seriously for much these days as they have North Korea Chairing Disarmament and has the Iran chairing their Women Rights Commission.

They might have done a number of good things in the past but these days it has become at best almost useless.

Gonna go out on a limb and surmise that the UN is showing a modicum of respect in the probably futile hope that the gesture will make the new regime chill a little bit.

Give 'em 6 months. You'll be saying the same thing when they pull another bonehead. Which seems to happen with greater frequency.

On the optimistic side when the USSR fell apart the communists tried to reassert themselves and the commentary was "you can't swim in the same river twice".

German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer once made the comment that "God places limits
on our intelligence but none what so ever on our stupidity." the UN is
demonstrating just how correct Herr Adenauer was.

I've no doubt you are correct. However, the gesture is yet another step by the UN into irrelevance as it unintentionally legitimizes the world's bad guys by shedding alligatpor tears for them when they die off.

And as much as we think he was a f*cking moron, that is the proper protocol for any leader of any nation within the UN.

Yep. If al-Assad dies off as President the UN should shed official and respectful tears over him as well.

Pity they won't step in while shedding tears over the other deaths there and show some international muscle.
