So we're suing ourselves because we don't want the stinking govt to tell us how to spend our money? No wait, we're paying them to sue us because they don't want us to tell them how to spend the money we give them? No, wait... there's something wrong with this picture.

I've been saying that for years. They are suing us because they don't want us telling them how to spend the money we give them, and we have to pay the other lawyer to defend our right to decide what the money we give them gets spent on. So, we are spending money to both decide how to, and how not to, spend our money.

There is something inherently wrong with that isn't there?

When the Indians start telling us how to live on their land, maybe we'll stop telling them how to spend our money.

Quote: Attawapiskat says chronic underfunding led to the housing crisis on the remote reserve, and the band contends that third-party management will cause delays in getting new housing into the community.
The government pledged funds to help retrofit existing buildings and has promised 22 modular homes, which will be trucked in when ice roads are ready, but it's not clear how long it will take to ready them for families once they've arrived. Yes, clearly he has done even worse than the chief. I have to wonder why they are in such a state of crisis when other bands in the area seem to be doing a fair bit better.

Cause I think I heard someone say you are paying them to sue you. And I'm guessing whatever the outcome is you lose. Seems like you might still owe a little on your land the previous owner should have disclosed a lien from a while back.

(Just like they acquired it from the previous occupants) I don't think there is an outstanding balance, since we've both decided the past will be best left there and all debts forgiven. Cause the alternative isn't pretty. But is funny. I was speaking with an Aussie friend about the recent protest in Aus involving the PM, and considering all the 'problems' we have with aboriginals - ours are pussycats compared to the ones down under. Very militant bunch those.

The only clean exit would be to let them have their land and stop sending money. That leaves us with the embarrassment of rather extreme poverty in a rich country. Reminds me of Rankin Inlet, you can move the town and rebuild but the old culture perpetuates itself anyway. Isolation, limited population and lack of economic viability seem to hold the dominant hand here.
