To start off with you need to make sure the person you hire fits the need of the company. They should fill your requirements which should also meet customers expectations. Look at the hire from your customer's perspective while keeping in mind that they need to fit and conform to the way you operate the company. I'm assuming the hire is an entry level position and doesn't require any specific education or certifications.

Hmmm....

Well......you could ask them how their previous work experience may help them in the new position if they were hired.

Are they comfortable opening a conversation with people they don't know.

Describe to them the current work environment and ask if they can handle working in that environment.

Ask them what, if any sales training they have and how they feel that will help them.

When asking references questions, just remember they may have to be guarded in their answers from a legal perspective. In other words they may not be able to tell you the real truth without getting taken to court.

I'd ask things like:

What is their best quality?
What area of work could they improve in?
Were they punctual?
Were they dependable?
Were they off sick frequently?
Why did they leave your employment?
Did they get along with other employees?
Were they able to take on new responsibilities without constant supervision?
Were they able to work independently without supervision?

I'd ask the prospective employee the same questions along with some examples to see how they match up too.

If the person was an awful employee and they tell you that. That may be considered slanderous and it may get themselves in trouble.

Ask the references one question. If there was an opening would you rehire this person. That requires only a yes or no answer nothing to get taken to court for.

that is brutal..

an employer should be able to say wither or not they were a bad employee...

here's a tip people.. don't be a fuck up at your job and then no one would have to say you're a shitty employee...

is it wrong that i want to give my new employees a list of my top ten biggest pet peeves and tell them it's a matter of safety so I don't have to kill them???
