I think the rise of the EU has added to the appeal of independence. Scots feel that their economic success depends more on the EU than the UK. With the EU, an independent Scotland is much more likely to succeed, economically.

Scotland will not be independent within the EU no more than it's independent within the UK. It'd just be swapping rule from Westminster for rule from Brussels.

I think that generally that is true but in the Global economy it's difficult for any country to be really independent esp. if it is a smaller, low population one. The question would be whether they would be better off in the EU as a separate state or sort of in as an English province. England's position here is rather uncertain and that reality is passed on to the Scots.

As a Canadian I tend to think of England/Scotland as a team because they seem to have worked well together in Canada. Even our first Prime Minister, Sir John A MacDonald, was a Scot.

On the other hand what is Hadrian's wall doing there? I am going to have keep a closer eye on this though it seems rather clear to me that Scotland has more potential in separation than Quebec does.
