Western Socialist countries have highest standard of living in the world which proves socialism is a better system than american capitalism. So much for American capitalism

Go have a look at the facts, or are they just socialist propganda from wiki?

Standard of living in the United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quote:
On comprehensive measures such as the UN Human Development Index the United States is always in the top ten, currently ranking number eight. Scandinavian countries, Ireland, Belgium, Canada, Australia, and (until recently) Japan; Canada and Norway have alternately held the top spot for some time. On the Human Poverty Index the United States ranked 16th, one rank below the United Kingdom and one rank above Ireland.[4] On the Economist's quality-of-life index the United States ranked 13, inbetween Finland and Canada, scoring 7.6 out of a possible 10. The highest given score of 8.3 was applied to Ireland.

While teh evidence seems to be there, Capitalism has done good for America and others to a certain extent. With every system there are pros and cons.

America became the superpower it is in part due to Capitalism.

All Ideologues have their Pro's and Cons...

But I'm a socialist, so I agree with you, ;)

I think you need a well balanced system with elements of both.

The UN HDI index was recently changed a few years ago so data from before then (i.e. when Canada was #1) cannot be directly compared with the latest HDI figures. One of the reasons why it was changed was because GDP/capita was given too small a rating within the index. For example, countries like Poland and Argentina got almost the same rating in the GDP/capita category as the U.S. and Luxembourg, despite being so much poorer.

I think that a balance between Socialism and capitalism needs to be maintained. And I beleive Canada for the most part has this balance. We have the capitalist influence from our US neighbours and the socialist influence from europe/scandanavia.

I think in Canada we are getting too much capitalist influence in recent years though.
"The United States has one of the widest rich-poor gap of any high-income nation today." Canada is heading down this road as well.

I like the capitalism system because it rewards people for hard work and skills. I don't think there is any other place that allows so many poor people to become wealthy on their own accord.

Of course, I am heavily influenced by my parents. They are a product of what the capitalism can do for people.

It's always preferable for a system to incorporate the best elements of several ideologies rather than strictly adhere to one extreme or the other.

That said however, America is the closest thing to a purely capitalist country as has ever existed. It may not be perfect, but compare it to purely socialist countries like the former Warsaw Pact or Soviet Union. None of them even exist anymore as socialism is an unworkable, inefficient, un-natural system of government.

In France, which is much more socialist than America, they are currently struggling with double digit unemployment, a flat economy, and rioting youth in their streets.

Quebec, the most socialist province in Canada, is only able to sustain their system due to generous transfer payments from capitalist Ontario and Alberta.

Socialism is like a spoilt teenager with a cell phone and American Express Gold Card. It only works so long as there's a capitalist grown-up around to pay the bills.

I don't mind socialist programs in a democratic country, but I don't like the mantra of socialism it breeds lazy people. I'm a capitalist with social safty net leanings.

Sarkozy gives the French some slim, tenuous, lining of hope. But France is pretty much doomed whatever they do.

Their cities are now over run with violent Muslim thugs who consider gang raping non-muslim women a sport, their labour force will violently resist even the most modest of reforms, and their economy is in the tank.

Unfortunately, I don't think the PPCLI, Grenadier Guards and 101st Airborne can save them this century!
