The situation can get worse. There is a very large Hasidim community in Lakewood, New Jersey that is just as hard line. They also have unofficial groups that intimidate both men and especially women to fall into line and conform. Their "encouragement" can be sever.
Any group that tries to do anything about is instantly labeled anti-Semitic and will back off. We are so choked with the need to be PC that sometimes we overlook things that we shouldn't.
The fact that she was able to get out and make her own choice about what she wants to do is a huge success and I wish her well.
