We have a national horse but no national bird. There's a movement afoot to name Canada's national bird. (I'm sure you can find it if you google.)

So what bird do you think?

I'm going with Loon. That haunting cry says wide open spaces, which kind of defines Canada in our mythos, if not in reality for most people.

There's a joke hidden in there somewhere, and I think it might be dirty, so I'm going to change the subject.

Look...

Chickadee.

Image

Not to be confused with the frozen Kee Kee bird of the north.

Their calls are similar, but the Kee Kee's call is more like...

"Kee Kee Kee...

Kee...rist, It's cold up here."

(Yeah, I know. Old joke, right? )

Chickadee....

Species

Black-capped chickadee, Poecile atricapillus
Boreal chickadee, Poecile hudsonicus
Carolina chickadee, Poecile carolinensis
Chestnut-backed chickadee, Poecile rufescens
Grey-headed chickadee, Poecile cinctus
Mexican chickadee, Poecile sclateri
Mountain chickadee, Poecile gambeli

As for the Hummingbird the number of species is much too large to post here.

[huh] Mmmm... Nope. He just asked a question.

To answer it, here in Alberta we only have a few, and of them I'd vote for the Ruby-throated. They're great dive bombers, and SO much fun to watch. And - they're just downright pretty birds.

I second the Whiskey Jack ... or any kind of Jay. They're smart, bold and they don't mind telling you see what they think of you.

I would have thought that the loon or the Canada goose was already our national bird. :?

One is our currency and the other one is our tax system.
