Finished Dan Simmon's Flashback, a dystopian future vision of the US and the world. It was pretty good and much better than Tom Kratman's Caliphate, which was nothing less than a neo-con wish list.

Re-reading Roger Taylor's The Chronicles of Hawklan series. Read it quite a few years ago. It's sort of similar to the Wheel of Time genre, as you're not quite sure if it's set in the far future or a distant past.

Finally started reading Fermat's last Theorem by Simon Singh.

For the record, Star Trek got it wrong...

In "The Royale", an episode (first aired 27 March 1989) of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Captain Picard states that the theorem had gone unsolved for 800 years. At the end of the episode Picard says, "Like Fermat's theorem, it is a puzzle we may never solve." Wiles' proof was released five years after the episode aired.

^^ I recall that episode. ;) And had a look at the really really long proof of the theorem. It came a long way from some scribbles in the margins!

Right now, I'm reading all sorts of books on food preservation. 'Charcuterie' and 'Salumi' both by Michael Ruhlman and Brian Polcyn. 'Amish canning' by Georgia Varozza and various books put out by canning product suppliers like "Ball Complete Book of Home Preserving" by Lauren Devine .

There is something about growing your own food, processing it with simple means and preserving it to eat year round. [drool]

[B-o] Good choice. I got into the books after the first season of the show after a friend inadvertently spoiled what happens at the end of the first book and didn't want that to happen again.

I gave up on that series. It had such promise and then the story line got bogged right down...especially after book 7
