$1:
The Canadian Wheat Board Alliance has released a one page summary exposing how it claims the private grain trade and the federal government are misleading the public on who is responsible for the chaos at Canada’s grain ports.

Kyle Korneychuk, a spokesperson for the alliance says their calculations demonstrate the grain companies have taken over 1.6-billion dollars in excess profits from wheat alone so far this crop year.

The Alliance uses data from Ottawa-created grain broker Canadian Wheat and Barley as well as posted tariff rates and grain export volumes to the end of January from the Canadian Grain Commission and the Canadian Transportation Agency.

They say it shows the private grain companies are using the system to make record profits at the expense of farmers.

Korneychuk says the prime minister's threats to the railways are a smoke screen.

He claims the farmers’ share of the international price of grain has gone down from 84% under the single-desk Canadian Wheat Board to around 40% today.

The grain companies, he says, have taken the lion’s share of the international price at the west coast because the railways are constrained by legislation from taking much more than 12 percent.

In related news, train companies profits were up 17% last quarter, despite their insistence that they had to run shorter trains because of the cold weather. (and couldn't move grain fast enough)

I live about 500 m from one of the busiest rail lines in Canada. 19 km to the east is one of the largest grain terminals which at this time is hiring 'anyone' to work on an expansion which is expected to take at least a year to complete.
No short trains now. I'm not exagerating when I say many are at least 1 mile long. 2 engines pulling, one in the middle & 1 bringing up the rear. All grain cars.

Grain elevators here, which are some of the largest in the world are nearly full with no place to move it. Ships aren't moving much because of thick ice and it appears it won't get much better this summer. So the government may want to start fining the shipping companies like CSL.
