R=UP

I blame the disaster almost entirely on Mountbatten, who didn't gather enough intel on the area and refused to let anyone bombard (naval or aerial) it before the raid began.

While I certainly honor the brave men who fought, bled, and died in this raid I find myself critical of the World War One thinking that thought that this was a good idea. The British military leadership at the time had no qualms about wasting lives for spurious reasons.

I firmly believe that it is a good thing that the loss of thirty men these days is a cause of national mourning. Back at that time the loss of even 30,000 men was just considered 'part of the game'.

Pity the first video fails to mention the Victoria Cross won by padre John Foote on that beach that day also.

Darkest day in our history.

And yet, without the lessons we learned from it, D-day could have gone very wrong.

True. The primary lesson being not to let the British generals make any major decisions. :wink:

Mind you it was Ike, prior to being "Supreme allied Cmdr" (thank god) who wanted to put 12 divisions (primarily Commonwealth) ashore without supplies to fight it out to the last man in order to take heat off the Russians

Not to detract by our own sacrifices and accomplishments, but to answer your question,the unfortunate truth is that we couldn't have won without the Soviets.
75% of German casualties in WW2 were at the hands of the commie hordes.
